As it happens, the stocks to which I refer are the neck/wrists type and I make no apology for not worrying about someone who mugs old people having some back pain.

Yes send them to prison, that'll teach them ::)
What is the alternative, Mick ?  We have abolished hard labour, public floggings, and various other nasties that are incompatible with a civilised society : that leaves two options -- prison, and/or a heavy fine.  For a crime such as the one we are discussing, prison seems the only option to me.

** Phil.

Phil,
I honestly feel that our society is paying the price for being too soft on criminals.
We may well have done away with "nasties that are incompatible with a civilised society"
We send people to prison to deny them their liberty and then prisons do every thing to make it more comfortable.
Our society has seriously got it wrong when there are literally hundreds of charities and bodies to help prisoners and very few to help and support victims.
Prisoners are granted legal aid at the drop of a hat to fight for the most ridiculous of infringements to "their human rights".
You only have to look at the recidivism rate to know that prison is good for one thing...to stop the offender committing crimes on the street during the time he is locked up. Once out...reoffend.
Still it's reassuring to know how our tax pounds are spent, while little Johnny Rapist is spending a little time behind his door he is either watching his colour TV with Sky or playing on his Play Station while he waits for Landing Officer to unlock him so he can go to gym with its hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of equipment.

So for alternatives, for public disorder offences, low level violence etc what is wrong with a little public humiliation, stocks and all.
Serious crime should always warrant a custodial sentence but make it a punishment, do away with all the fluffy stuff that goes on. It should be a place where people do not want to go, rather than in most cases prison is nothing more than an occupational hazard.

That'll do for starters...

he might rather have called for them to go to prison for a very long time, with which we would all have agreed.

Where I buy my coriander you can get a huge bunch for about 60p, the bunches are about a third of a carrier bag size, to give some idea but it's about 20 miles from home.

I chop mine and put it in a lock and lock type container and freeze it. When I need some to add to a curry, out of the freezer with it and dig some out with a spoon (sounds worse than it is). I find it does not lose flavour and is a good fix if you have no fresh coriander.
Clearly useless as a garnish.
Cheers,

Hi Phil,
Exploding Rice Ice..........I can't say I've ever experienced that.
Mick

Interesting !  It has certainly happened to mine, which why I no longer freeze it; I wonder what the difference might be ?
I'm not sure but I know I cook my rice to the point where there is still some resistance when squeezed between finger and thumb, how long do you cook your rice ?

I've just noticed your "beware the trolls of March" comment. I assume you are talking about the month and not the town of March.....or am I missing something??
Please let me know ;)

Yeah, I don't think you want to go bigger than 24cm.

Totally agree,

I have tried this base recipe and followed it as best as I could with out the exact amounts and it does produce a very good garabi.
I have never seen a chef sieve his garabi before. I PMed Chewy about this and he confirmed that this was 'old school' from the 70's. My first kitchen visit wasn't until the 80's so that would explain that.
I did sieve the garabi myself and I was surprised how much fibrous material was taken out, I would suspect a lot of it would have come from the cabbage. It did leave the gravy very smooth.
Having tasted it once made, it tastes very much like a finished curry albeit not as intense of course. I went on to make a lamb dopiaza madras hot.
It was a very good curry with a great depth of flavour.
Nice one Chewy, I really enjoyed it.
Cheers,
Mick
