Lets Talk Curry / Re: meat substitutes
April 01, 2013, 07:35 PM
Both my wife and my father are veggie, so I do have some experience of cooking for them.  Aside from the usual mixed vegetable (from frozen, straight into the madras etc) or mushroom (same applies) curries, Quorn or supermarket-branded meat-free alternatives like lamb style strips or chicken style pieces are best lightly fried first so they keep their shape - think of it a bit like browning beef to seal it.  Then the pieces can be used in the curry and they won't fall to bits.  I do a "Quo-rma" that goes down very well for the lightweights...  ;) pop the frozen quorn pieces in, fry for a minute or so, then add the base, almond powder, coconut block etc

The other advantage is they don't need pre-cooking and the pieces cook in minutes

Hope this helps

Tempting as they are, I think I'd be in for "Major" grief if I spent

I was making the C2G indian base last weekend, blending as usual, it heated up rapidly within a couple of minutes... Lidls were exceedingly helpful even though the box and receipt had been mislaid by my darling wife ::) the store advised I call their customer services who very quickly sent a letter with which I am to take back to the shop along with the blender for a full refund

Yesterday I used my stalwart of a jug blender to do g&g paste as I have done many times before and I broke that too (plastic lug at the bottom off the jug sheared off and pinged off every adjacent surface like a ball bearing in a pinball machine), then to cap it all old faithful 120w kenwood hand blender with non-detachable stick got dropped in the sink as I was cleaning it.

I don't think blenders and me are a good mix....  ;)

could be worth a try...

Lidl silvercrest are excellent. If it breaks then buy another at that price. Never had to buy another in three years though.  ;)

I've just used my Lidl 600W Silvercrest stick blender for the first time on base... it got very hot, very quickly, and started smoking - it's going back for a refund (not too sure about replacement  :o)

The Asda equivalent (Smart Price) Mild Curry Sauce on its own is lovely poured over chips

The Asda chilled indian takeaway section beef madras in the individual trays/meal bags (the ones with pilau rice, naan etc) is nice.  For curry sauce jars the only one that really hit the spot for me is the Sharwoods Bhut Jolokia, and before that the Pataks Madras sauce in the small tins.

Quote from: Axe on March 11, 2013, 02:56 PMWhat they should have done is put the price of the lamb dish up and given a cheaper beef option to allow the customer to make the choice. :-\

but that's what they've done... albeit unscrupulously to maximise profit - lamb stock cubes are cheaper than real lamb...
