I can't speak to the specific applications that you use Phil as I don't use them (all) but for the open community, the reasons we have created alternatives are many and varied, let me see if I can give you a few:
- We would love to break MS's monopoly.
- We would prefer to have common standards (MS only has standards MOSTLY in it's on products and not even then all the time IE being an example).
- We do it allow for more frequent updates and problem resolution.
- We do it to show that we understand what users want and not what developers are prepared to offer.
- We do it, because we can and to prove that we are capable of doing it.
- We do it for you.

I am sure there are many more contributors to open source projects out there that may have other reasons.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that there are options for everything, sometimes for the better, such as NOT staying on a big 6 standard energy tariff, just because it is who you have always used... (personal family issue I have).

If you are happy with what you have, then good, but if you are willing to try new stuff, then there is much more out there than is advertised and mostly safe.

I was going to go to Linux when it was announced Windows XP was to be canned but since I got canned first, money became tight and my time needed to be deployed to finding other work, which has so far ended up being sporadic and low paid.

There is another alternative to MS Office and 365 though which not only have I been using for years but now most of my friends and relatives do:

Hi Jon,
From what i understand you can pretty much pick them when you want, if not ripe when picked they will not be as hot as if you let them go full term.

If not being used they tend to be either "dried out" by hanging in the sun, or frozen, did you feed them onnce the fruits had set? i remember a guy on youtube saying if you want plants to feed you, you have to feed them.
I havent got a greenhouse or poly tunnel so it is what it is, My Dorset Naga is only going to give a dozen or so.

Remove all fruit if you want to overwinter the plants and have a head start in the spring.....

All sound advice, especially the feeding and de-fruiting.  I have also found that as the days shorten any flowers will fail to bear fruit and can also be picked off.  I also 'top off' my plants by picking out the top growth shoots to prevent the plant becoming 'leggy' as it tries to grow to the light and will in spring 'bush' out more, producing more fruit.

The only thing I would add is that if they are supposed to change colour, wait, let them and use/freeze when ripe.  If you are unsure, then when most fruits over-ripen, the skin will begin to wrinkle.  I have found the optimum time is right before that or when they literally are beginning to wrinkle.  Different fruit on the same plant will ripen at different times so no need to pick them all at the same time.

I hope that helps.

Hi all,

I started this thread a while ago as a means to engage people in debate, maybe to get some new information and if the effects would have any impact on us curry lovers.

Since I started it, we have debated 'is climate change happening' and yes, every day the climate is different, hold your hand out or look up but since we are so short lived, in terms of the planet, can we comment on our influence?

I would suggest (no scientific theory or fact right now) that the rise in consumption of land, air, sea resources by 7bil people now walking the planet, compared to only 1bil people just 200 years ago (in geological terms), that we ARE having a massive effect but the results are not immediately evident.  The planet is huge, it resources likewise, the enertia caused by changes may be slow.. but it is likely also very slow to stop and if I may take a very simplistic view, Do we have 200 years left to reverse the changes?

I have read about 'tipping points' and 'resource wars' and I thought they were fantastical but maybe our real fight is with corporate businesses that care not for long term planet resources but only with short term monetary gains.

We could all drive an electric car, but we won't, because the supply of Lithium to make the batteries to hold the charge is finite and running out... so we need another solution.. such as... we ALL don't drive and we hand all of our travel over to a few electric powered transport providers? No? In the current climate, we want everybody else to stop driving to reduce congestion, as long as it is not us!

Peoples cannot see that we are in the crisis position, that we need to hand over control to a few for the benefit of us all, partly because we do not realise we have to start now and mainly becuase we do not trust THEM, the same businesses that are possibly only thinking short term, for their shareholders and adding to the problem.

My thoughts.

And on more curry related terms, I might be able to grow a curry leaf tree, other chillies that I normally only grow indoors have done well for the last few months in my flexible outdoor greenhouse structure.  I just need to find a plant, to start.

I am still here, still reading and still cooking.  Mostly tried and tested that we like but also a lot more experimentation after Chewy's comments several months ago.

BIR curry? No. Mainly pork based variations of the dishes I like best and so no reason to post them here although the Pork Balti was particularly delicious.

Hi Garp,

I don't know the answer to your question but in my years of experience, I have never had any 'fruit' rot on the plant.

I have grown many varieties, including having to fashion a humidity tent (using a LOT of cling film) to grow jalapenos in the house as I don't have a greenhouse.  I have grown some that remain Green and some that ripen to Red and others that change to all sorts of colour from Yellow through to Purple.  The ones that ripen to red, I sometimes harvested a few early whilst still green so they wouldn't be so hot.

The ones that ripen have always changed colour from a tip upwards or as a light bulb slowly being turned up (Cherry Bombs).  The only thing I ever experienced was the flesh becoming wrinkly when they had begun to over ripen.

I hope that helps though I suspect not, sorry.

Welcome A Board djrogers1

Posting is not obligatory here but we would like you to feel welcome and to enjoy the recipes contributed by so many over so long a time.  I hope you give many a try and if you do have any feedback, that you share it with us.

New recipes/local variations with local ingredients are also appreciated as not all brands/products are always available around the world.

Traditional Indian Recipes / Re: lamb biryani

With respect, CT suggested that my choice of dish for trying a new restaurant/takeaway, chicken biryani was a simple dish, prepared by a lower cook (sous chef) or the Tandoori cook (commis chef?).

Personally, I have always had a problem with this dish and when I read this recipe and the time to prepare it, I come back to my original assertion that if a restaurant/takeaway can make a good biryani, then the rest of the offerings should also be competently made.

Let me know if you make this Phil and your evaluation please.  If I fail to impress myself with a basic recipe, maybe I need something more involved.  99% of the time I have all of the ingredients listed.
