Lets Talk Curry / Lost sale
July 07, 2026, 03:08 PM
On one of the really hot days recently, thought to try a home delivery from a balti house that I haven't tried yet. It's just under 4 miles from me. It gets the thumbs up from Andy Munro and I watched a couple of YouTubes on the place. It's in Selly Park, a suburb of Birmingham. Quite smart and they serve their chicken shashlik to your table on a skewer, hanging from a hooked stand. A black iron sizzler with fried onions underneath. This actually looked a bit daft, I felt. Anyway, went to book online. They have their own system for this. Decided on a seekh kebab starter, balti chicken and a naan. Payed extra for "madras" strength. I also asked them for a menu. Wondered if they would throw in a papadum and dips Was ready to pay, but then saw instructions on "minimum order". Screen shot. I have removed my details and theirs. To order I would have to order something else that I didn't really want. £40.00 plus for a home delivery curry, for one, from a balti house? Pay the tip in advance? What? No thanks. Although not exactly comparable, the lunch service at Opheem in Birmingham city center (two michelin stars) can be had for £75.00.

Am I being unreasonable?

Being trying a couple of new additions at my local Persian/Iranian bakery.

Looked up the first one and it's much lighter than a typical naan. So, it's basically a diet naan.

They get the other one in from another bakery; delivered fresh every day. More expensive. £2.75 for a pack of 4. One is shown leaning up against my micro. Look good for wraps. Thinking Sherpur doner kebab.

Revisited. Recipe adapted from Vivek Singh's Cinnamon Kitchen: The Cookbook. Spices as per the recipe. I replaced most of the sugar with saffron syrup. Vivek serves this one with a raisin raita. I opted for a scoop of vanilla ice cream, topped with chocolate sprinkles.

Lets Talk Curry / Balti Dave's videos
June 17, 2026, 02:50 PM
Breaking News. A new series of videos by Balti Dave will be starting in a couple of weeks. First one, Balti chicken. He opened the Mr Dave's balti houses in Lye, starting in 1984. He posts occasionally on one of the YouTube curry pages I subscribe to; The Curry Secret, which is where I got this info from.

A while back I posted some old photos of an Adil's takeaway balti (from the 3Bs thread) on The Curry Secret. Dave replied.

Have a guess where he trained as a chef and learned how to make a balti.

Lets Talk Curry / Smoky cinnamon chicken
June 05, 2026, 11:51 AM
This recipe just dropped on one of the Facebook curry groups I follow. Immediately thought of the Adil's Balti lamb, which had a lovely smokiness to it. Potentially much wider applications. Charred cinnamon stick and mustard oil. Interesting. Thoughts?

Worth a look just to see an Adil's Balti chicken shabzi.

There was another Adil's balti video with Ade Edmondson linked on here somewhere, but I can't find it anywhere. Including YouTube. Help!

Lamb tikka with fried onions and garlic mayo. Did a whole leg of NZ lamb. Laziza paste; my usual additions, plus a little freshly ground green cardamom/mace. 48 h marinade. BBQ.

Fancied a hot curry. Needed a couple of breaks and several glasses of water. Hit the spot though.

Earlier this week I logged out of the forum and was then unable get back in again. Kept getting this message:

Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.

Just in case anyone else has experienced this, the fix was to clear my browser's cache and restart my tablet.

It's a mixture of Trad, Hotel and BIR cooking styles. Definitely worth a look, imo. It's not run of the mill stuff. For me, the Chicken Shobuz Masala recipe, in particular, with some adaptation, holds great promise.

Peas are one of the Pick & Mix (£0.75 each) additions for any balti on Shababs (Birmingham) menu.
