I had 3 Tandoors made one is too small as such at the neck to safely put your arm in to stick naan breads to the side

loveitspicy - they look great - a few questions if I may as I might like to have a go at this myself?

where did you get the terracotta pots?

did you put the holes etc in the bottom yourself?

Is there a danger of cracking the pot when you do so?

if so how do you overcome that?

Hi Steve

Im in Thailand mate - i had them made up at a little kiln i found - to be honest ive no idea what is going to happen!!
I would think i will have to surround them in something then encase them - the problem ive had before is the temperature getting too hot and yes these would crack i reckon - mind you at 20 squid is worth a go! i know the gas fittings are about 15 squid but im trying to get one which is semi auto - ie you turn a knob and it ignites the flame

The holes were made at the time of making

cheers Rich - most helpful - I'm thinking that the nearest thing I could source locally would be at a garden centre but I reckon they are more expensive than

Sounds like a fantastic present

I'm wondering with these tandoors if they should have been made out of a different clay?? but having never made one before ive no idea - i did find another little place that makes fire bricks so if they fail it could be a trip to get the fire clay and take it to the potters and get them to make another

Tandoor looks pretty straight forward, the brickwork to hold the insulation in, could be  substituted for something less labour intensive, if need be. It is a permanent feature once it's up. The weather in Scotland knocks alot of outside activities on the head, or else I'd cook outside alot more than the odd barbeque  :(

Thats an excellent diagram, thats all a tandoor is really isn't it? If the clay pots you have are working for you now & with a bit of bodging, that should work a treat :) Getting the base of the pot to sit flat would be important. I don't know how hot a tandoor oven gets on the outside. How hot is your pot getting during cooking?

Those three pots look really excellent. Whoever made them did a first class job by the look of it. Was that ?20 each or ?20 for all three? Your diagram for the stainless steel chamber looks spot on. Will you be adding vermiculite or something as an insulator?

The teracotta will stand up fine just keep it dry,
Ive made a couple now but the british damp weather does take its toll and now take ages to get it propper hot
ie naan cooking but tikkas and sheeks are fine
