have you all been watching the repeats of Keith Floyd's programme on Sky Travel? Its called " Floyd on India".  A brilliant show which uses fascinating ingredients...has anyone managed to find curry leaves in their local asian food store? or how about mustard seed oil? and he uses the spice mace (the rind of a nutmeg?) all very interesting. He travels all around india and cooks regional dishes, Its on Sky Travel at 9am, 2pm and 6.30pm.  Check it out! oh and not many bottles of wine in sight! :P

Fresh curry leaves and fresh methi you can get from Alperton in London and most asian grocers. Mustard oil is a no no. Don't eat it, it is, for want of a better word 'poisonous'. Equally frying mustard seeds will over time be detrimental to your health. This is a long term thing like the recent red dye scares. If you eat it once a month it's no big deal. Mace, well it's been a standard english spice for 500 years? :)

Sorry i just don't rate any traditional indian/pakistani dishes. I've tried them, and i like them but i find they just aren't anything in comparison to a traditional british indian curry. You pays your money etc...

Tried them a few times but, curry leaves, fresh or dried, did nothing to the flavour of my curry.

Mustard oil - make your curry with this and you prolly wont eat it.

Mace, tried it, added nothing to the flavour of my curries, it went into the bin eventually like dozens of other things I've tried.

I use mustard oil to marinade chicken tikka

And as for curry leaves my local asda sells them fresh!

darnations! i cant find curry leaves...went to 3 asda superstores but with no joy.  My local asian store said the leaves aint anything special.  I never knew that about the mustard sed oil, ill need to investigate further.  Maybe thats why my family are turning green...hehehe ill cut out using the mustard seeds i think!

I dont think mustard oil is legal in this country, I bought some from my local asian grocer and it is marked 'for external use only'

Yeah apparently the mustard oil has medicinal purposes, it can be used as an ointment for aches and pains. Maybe Floyd had a few too many "sherrys" on the show..hehehe

I hasten to add that I do use it in cooking  ;D but not in great quantities, I think its Bruce Edwards recipe for chicken tikka marinade that has 8 TBSP of it in, I wimp out and use just 2 and about 4 of veg oil

The only time I have ever used it I think is in chicken tikka marinade, I would use it if I had a recipe that specifically called for it though
