Could coconut milk substitute for yogurt?
« on: August 09, 2011, 11:05 AM »
I'm new to the forum. In reading recipes for curry, I sometimes find yogurt listed as an ingredient. Yogurt is not that easy to find where I live. I was wondering if coconut milk would work as a substitute. If not, what might work?

Thanks in advance, Perry

Hi Perry,

You could use Coconut milk, but it would give a totally different finish to your curry. If yogurt is not easy to come buy in you're area, then you might want to consider investing in this product.

I bought this several years ago and it makes wonderful delicious home made yogurt :)

Hi Perry
Welcome to the forum
I'm only guessing, but you may be able to buy Thai Coconut Kefir
or make your own yogurt. I've never done this myself, but my local Indian restaurants all make they own and Manjula's video makes it look fairly simple.
The packets of starter culture should be easily obtained online.
Hope this helps ;)

Thank you 976bar and Chewytikka for your responses and links. I can see now that yogurt is an important ingredient when a recipe calls for it. I checked-out the link to Easiyo and also watched the video on making yogurt.

I will continue to look for yogurt here or follow-up on one of your suggestions. Thanks again. Perry

Whereabouts are you Perry?

Thinking back, there's not that many recipes on here that call for yogurt. Which recipes were you interested in out of curiosity?

976,

I was just thinking the very same thing!  If it's for tikka, then blades seems to be the most popular and that doesn't contain any.  Some Rogan Josh recipes call for it too but mine doesn't and that has been getting some pretty good reviews of late.

Personally, I detest yogurt, it makes me heave just to smell it, and so I try to avoid any recipe that calls for it.

The only recipe that it seems to be a must in, is obviously, yogurt mint sauce.

I wouldn't have thought that coconut milk would make a suitable substitute, a nice alternative maybe?

Ray :)

Hi Razor, Great minds think alike!! :)

I do love yogurt, but it needs to be a thick Greek yogurt and for breakfast with honey is untouchable in my opinion, but in curries??? it's ok for traditional home style curries but not so much for BIR...

I have read the reviews on your Rogan Josh and will be trying that next when I go and get some more lamb as I love Lamb Rogan Josh!! :)

My only problem with lamb is that I can never get it just right.... If I cook it in a pan it seems to dry up and I don't get it to the point where it just falls apart, but if I use the slow cooker, the lamb is perfect but it just loses that BIR touch in the process :(

Any ideas mate please?

Also, what cut of Lamb would you use? I normally use leg. Maybe I cut the chunks too small and they could do with being the same size as Chicken Tikka Chunks, i.e. 2x2?

Hi

Try the rice or soy milk option, if you look for vegan yogurt recipes. Or use lime juice as if you were making curds, strain saving the liquid. Then whiz and add back the reserved liquid till you get the right consistency.

Hi Perry,

Welcome to the forum  :)

With regards to your question, yoghurt cannot be replaced with a coconut substitute, but you have mentioned that you have found a way to overcome this obstacle. If you would like anymore help with making yoghurt then please let me know.

Thank you,

Abdul

Sorry for the delay in responding. I've been out of town.

Thank you for all your responses.  976bar, I'm in Taiwan. My impression is that dairy products, other than cheese and milk, are not widely available here.  I don't remember seeing yogurt in local grocery stores.

Abdulmohed2002, thank you for the offer for more information. I'll do some more searching locally to see if I can find yogurt. It might be available in traditional markets.
