Hot Curry
« on: March 11, 2007, 10:17 AM »
Whats the hottest curry that everyone would try?  I'm a wimp in the hotness stakes, I lag behind with an embarrassing MADRAS.
I've tried VINDALOO but after the first mouthful, my mouth sets on fire and can't taste anything else. :P

While I'm here I must confess to ordering a take away last night, chicken balti and pilau rice, forgive me for I have sinned...........but tasted bloody lovely  ;D

It is unlikely that any curry is too hot for a true chilli head, who enjoys the taste of chilli and dosen't really notice heat. But the important point is, TAKE NOTE, most 'hot' currys are not worth eating, and many are just plain INEDIBLE. Please reflect on this.

I agree with you there Dave, i've gone to far a few times and it's never enjoyable.  I would eat a phall but it's very occasionaly, a vindaloo is just right for me.

Hi xpatx, a Madras is just right for me now, haven't had a Vindaloo since I was eighteenish (ah the 70`s what a time)usually so full of beer I didn't care how hot it was. Nowadays I enjoy a few beers, good company and a Chicken Madras. One night I went to my local BIR and ordered a Madras and afterwards the chef came to the table to ask me if it was OK and he hadn't made it too hot for me. I told him it was perfect even thou It could have been a bit hotter. We went in about a week later and I ordered a Madras and it was a stinger!!  :o Different chef maybe? New batch of sauce? Anyone else experienced this??

Mrs B and myself have, over the years ate some hot stuff.

I still enjoy a really hot curry, but Mrs B has weaned herself off the really hot stuff!

We have over the years 'mellowed' a bit but still enjoy that something !!

For us now it's more about flavour, some hot curries are exactly that - hot,  what I really enjoy is heat with taste and texture. Anyone agree??? ::)

Edit for spelling!!??

I agree with you there.  A good hot, hot curry needs to be made with plenty of fresh chillies and not too much chilli powder.  The chilli powder will mask the flavours within and will also give you bad indigestion.  Other half and I appreciate very hot curries and are  quite particular when ordering from a restaurant or take-away.  I always give explicit instructions and most, I say most of the time we get curries to die for!  Couldn't do without my fix each week.  CQ

Yep Bee, purely inventions of the good ol' British Indian Restaurant (BIR)!  8)

In order of increasing hotness, it goes like this:

Madras
Vindaloo = tindaloo = bindaloo
Phal (hottest of all)

Basically, they genreally add more chilli powder to get the hotness.  If it's done well, it's very hot and very tasty (i.e. you can still taste the other ingredients). :P

If it's done badly, it's simply very hot and tastes of chilli powder (i.e you can taste nothing but chilli powder).

IMHO a decent phal is very hard to beat!  ;)
