We have an infrared thermometer which is useful I agree. We did manage to get the stone temp right for pizza but can't remember it offhand. I just figured if the stone was as hot as you could get it then they should cook really quickly, but I guess from your replies that that idea doesn't work. ;D Oh well back to chapati on the tawa instead.

Please forgive a non-naan-eater for butting in, but is it not the case that "Happy Chris" has demonstrated that naans can be cooked to perfection using a tava ? If so, then is it really worthwhile perserving with oven-bake methods ? Even if you do not have gas for cooking (as I do not), a propane/butane camping stove for heating the tava and singeing the naan would represent a relatively modest outlay ...
