Hello
After many failed attempts at making a decent Curry from scratch, I stumbled upon this website via some comments on a youtube video. Needless to say you have reignited my curry curiosity flame ;D
I spent yesterday producing a batch of base gravy to the youtube video's recipe but have yet to make anything with it.
I will probably be attempting Corry Anders chicken madras recipe in the next few days, I'll let you know how I get on with the combination of the base gravy I made and this madras recipe.
The base gravy recipe can be seen here - How to make base gravy the way it's done in Indian Restaurants and takeaways (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5x4oIVzfQZ4#)
If anyone has tried this already, please let me know how you found it although it is a little late for my first attempt as I have 4.5 litres of the stuff in the freezer - also I note i used plain vegetable oil in place of the 'seasoned oil' he mentions.
Bye for now...

Hi Booner
Welcome - good to have someone from my neck of the woods on the forum (well, I'm nearer to Chichester than Portsmouth, but I know Portsmouth well).
While it's not my default base recipe, to date I've knocked up a good 40 litres or so of the base gravy in the video you posted (Julian from Curry 2 Go in Chorley) to date (easy to do when you make 15L at a time), and like all decent base gravy recipes it works well if you make it with care and pride. There's no shortage of other great base recipes on here, so you've got a lot to look forward to!
And the great thing is that you'll soon be making curries far (far) superior to those I've experienced in many of Portsmouths restaurants and takeaways.

So, I take it you are not to keen on this recipe? I tasted it when finished, it was as expected after reading that it should taste like a mildly spiced veg soup.
I noticed it to be very smooth and creamy tasting also...

Well, it's just the base. I'm sure you'll make some great curries with it.

Yep - as StoneCut says, it's just the base. As long as it's composed of around 95% onions and contains a bit of garlic, ginger, and the usual spice suspects, etc., it will be great. Of far more importance is paying attention to the details, such as making sure the onions are cooked properly and for long enough, blending to a really smooth texture, and so on.
