Could you possibly record another version, this time using an induction hob ?!  But to be more serious, have you ever tried puffing a chapatti over a halogen hob, and if so, with what success ?

OK, with herself away in Abu Dhabi I will probably get away with it.  But if I am murdered on her return, you will have to live with that on your conscience !  The illustration looks very much like one of these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001DMDGFU/ref=asc_df_B001DMDGFU9344107?smid=AK66K9PDLKSFQ&tag=hydra0b-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22218&creativeASIN=B001DMDGFU&hvpos=1o5&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=18990541151694129663&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=), but what are the three additional yellow buttons you have on the front of yours ?

I have, Phil, and it works very well.

I put the chapatti on a grill tray grid and place it over the hob. (The grill tray grid raises the chapatti about half an inch above the hob.) Whack the heat on full (around 30-40 seconds a side), and watch the chapatti puff up like a blowfish.

Excellent, that's GBP 10 I've saved and also avoided the risk of being divorced on herself's return from Abu Dhabi !  I shall try it with a pre-made Elephant Atta chapatti this very evening.  Do you pre-heat the halogen element at all, or turn it on once the chapatti is in position ?

I do preheat the element in an effort to emulate the immediate heat you get with gas, but the usual caution re the different characteristics of different cookers definitely applies (i.e. if your chapatti is instantly cremated and you're left with a small disk of carbon, I absolve myself of all responsibility!).

I have in the past tried making chap's with the aid of a few youtube vids but not with much success.
I must say Chris, aside from not having the Kenwood I think even I could acheive reasonable results following your method.
I am just returning to work after a while out and once i get this bl*#dy month in hand business out of the way I have plenty to be trying out and this is definately on the list.
A very enjoyable video.
                                      Cheers!

Thanks for this Chris ,

I tried this yesterday evening and it worked exactly as in the video ... the best chapatis I've made for sure .. I didn't have a 'fluffer' so I used the wire rack from the oven as suggested ... perfect !!!   :)

Many thanks for this Chris. My next project/investment. The ready mades I've been buying have been sort of OK but they contain quite a bit of fat that I could do without.  Do you have a ratio for wholemeal flour, or is it the same?  Cheers, Rob.

the same ratio Rob but try to let the dough rest for longer minimum 1 hour.

Good vid Chris
Looks much better than your first vid on chapati making and a step up from the curry2go vid.

The Fluffer, Puffer as you call it, is labeled as a Chapati Toaster in the Asian Shops
for anybody looking to buy one (a couple of quid).

The Bengalis don't seem to have a name for the Toaster, as I've asked quite a few.

These are also great for finishing a Tawa Naan, I made some at the weekend.
Garlic and Rosemary. Yum.

Another way that works well is to use the wire rack from the Microwave, just place
it over the burner and adjust the heat to suit, mine sits 4 inches above the burner
and is ideal.

A couple of other interesting vids I found on the subject

Finally got around to trying this on my electric stove. The chapattis blew up like ballons (that was fun!) but the outer edges were often not cooked through so I was left with a ridge and those bits were too chewy to eat.
I guess I'll need to work on the proper setting for heat, but your method does indeed work - I just think that it seemingly works better with a gas stove.
