Title: Axe's Sag Aloo
Post by: DeeDee on May 21, 2012, 03:59 AM
I made this recipe with an added half cup of gravy base.  Tasted great, looks nice an' all.

Hi DeeDee by the look of those potatoes are they roasted or deep fried ?
Great picture does look appetizing.

Unclefrank,

I just followed the recipe so I think the look of the potatoes comes from the turmeric.

As a recent convert to being a vegetarian (health reasons) I've dabbled with swapping out chicken for veggies in some of my fave recipes (Madras, Jalfrezi etc).

I've found that dry cooking unpeeled potato chunks in a wok with turmeric and water for a while until they are half cooked and then using 'as if' it was prepared chicken works a treat.  The potatoes have a nice earthy roasted 'feel' and don't fall apart as much as par boiled and such.

Just tried this... very tasty indeed, although I didn't use enough spinach, next time I will use more!

I'm glad you both enjoyed it, I tend to prefer cooking fresh hence this recipe. I do however, have a more authentic BIR version that I really must get round to posting. :)

What a coincidence ive just made saag aloo today for the supermarkets - 60 to be exact - ours have a little more sauce - It helps in the freezing and defrosting to eat

Tomorrow is Aloo Matar - i wonder if anyone is doing that - will be making 60 again..

Coincidence cant believe it really making them today then seeing a thread on here.  Marvelous!!!

best, Rich

I didn't think spuds froze very well ?? If they do I'll definitely be giving it a go

Your are right - we have a little sauce in ours to coat and protect them - it seems to work with our vindaloo - we sell quite a bit.
Lets hope it works with the Saag Aloo they will be in the supermarkets and on sale for the weekend.

best, Rich
