Title: Tower 7L Pressure Cooker -
Post by: Salvador Dhali on March 27, 2012, 11:12 AM
I've been after a pressure cooker for a while, but strapped for cash so the dog's bollocks stainless steel all-singing/dancing model I wanted is out of the question at the moment.

Then I saw that Argos are doing a third off this baby:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8605782/c_1/1 (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8605782/c_1/1)|category_root|Kitchen+and+laundry|14418476/c_2/2|14418476|Cookware|14418537/c_3/3|cat_14418537|Pressure+cookers+and+steamers|14418546.htm

So I ordered it. Something of a bargain, or a crock of crap?

Time will tell, and I'll report back on findings as soon as I get to grips with the mother.

Hi SD i got a pressure cooker from Tesco (Tower 7 Litre)but wasn't any good, the amount of pressure build up in cooker didn't really save time on cooking, think it was a 7 psi.

Take a look at this http://fastcooking.ca/index.htm (http://fastcooking.ca/index.htm)

Thanks Unclefrank - some good info there.

I suspected that might be the case with the Tower, but I'll see how I get on with it and when I win the lottery I'll get the one I really wanted, which is this German jobbie: http://www.wmf.com/pressure-cookers/65-liter_82511356.html?sid=F33DC536-B8B1-4332-8601-9698E5B33CBC (http://www.wmf.com/pressure-cookers/65-liter_82511356.html?sid=F33DC536-B8B1-4332-8601-9698E5B33CBC)

You can almost feel the quality oozing from the screen...

In fact I've just cancelled the order.

Thanks again Unclefrank for steering me towards the path of light and righteousness.

I'm an impulsive sod at the best of times, but when it comes to cookware it has to be good quality - and work.

I'll put the 26 quid towards a state of the art number...

Hi SD

Not that it matters now, but I put a link to that one in Jan
http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=7651.msg66791#msg66791 (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=7651.msg66791#msg66791)

I found at the time that it was a 15psi one, by reading the products Q&A section.

But where is the product Q&A now? ???

I missed that thread, but despite some intensive research looking for the psi rating on that Tower, like you I couldn't find any. I did read somewhere that if no psi rating is specified, then it's usually because it's at the lower end of the scale.

It may be that the Tower 7L is the bargain of the century, but I had my heart set on a 15psi stainless one - preferably with the latest state-of-the-art technology that not only cooks your base to perfection in 10 minutes, but automatically blends it and is entirely operable via your smartphone or tablet....

Have to say that Argos were brilliant when I called to cancel. Instant refund to my card and I was on the phone for 2 minutes max.

Hi SD,
I've been wanting to try a small pressure cooker for single and double portions since peppering the whole kitchen with orange coloured oil  ::)
((I also did a big cook last friday for 15 people on my own. HARD WORK!!   There was a perfectly formed clean square at the end of the night when i removed my burner from the white plastic garden table  ;D))

The smallest size for a good price i can find is 3ltr, although 2ltr would probably be better. But then they get really expensive or compromise on the diameter.  The 3ltr is about 9", so a perfect size for single and double portions.

Here's a youtube vid for reference.  (ive seen a better one somewhere with a bowled out inside the same shape as an ali pan which would be even better.)

Cheers, Frank.  :)

Thanks for that, Frank - much appreciated. Interesting video that shows off the Prestige in context nicely.

I can see that further research is reequired before making the plunge. (I've definitely decided on a 7-litre stainless steel job, but which one will be the subject of much deliberation.)

Glad to hear your 15-strong cooking session went well too. You're dead right about it being hard work - I was knackered after mine, and I'm used to a bit of graft.

As for orange splattered kitchens, while I consider it a badge of honour after an intense curry session, it isn't viewed in the same light by others. I get through so much bleach I'm thinking about buying shares in Domestos! ;)

No worries Unclefrank. As said, I'm saving my pennies for somehting that will outlive me that I can pass on to the kids. (I'm sure they'll be delighted! ;D)

SD,

I bought a SS 16psi cooker from Aldi a couple of weeks ago, ?24 plus change.
I've been waiting a good while to get a sensibly priced high pressure one, low pressure ones are too slow.
Cubed beef / lamb etc takes 20 minutes to perfection for curries or pies or suchlike.

Give Aldi a try.

Thanks Rocky. Nearest Aldi to me is 20 miles away, but it's not too far from one of my favourite Asian stores, so next time I'm stocking the spice cupboard up I'll take a look.

I suspected that might be the case with the Tower

I bought a low cost pressure cooker from Argos a few years ago and it works perfectly well. It's either Tower or Prestige. I'd be amazed if more expensive models from the likes of Fagor or a German supplier are significantly better. Spare gaskets might be more difficult to buy, also. Why cancel your order on the basis of one bit of questionable feedback, going against the grain of numerous good reviews? I can't believe it would work at only 7psi. It would throw out all the times given in pressure cooker recipe books.

That's the reason why i returned it George, it just didn't save me any time when cooking, also the pressure cooker didn't come with a cookbook.
My first post in this thread did mention about the times.

It wasn't just that, George. Unclefrank's comment simply made me realise that, yet again, I had made an impulsive purchase through impatience. (I'm seeking therapy for this.) Whether or not the Tower is a great pressure cooker or not, as said I'd set my heart on a stainless steel model.

As for reviews, I do read them, but time has taught me that the only ones I can truly trust are those gained through personal experience, i.e., mine.

I'd set my heart on a stainless steel model.

Why? What's wrong with aluminium for a pressure cooker? Given a choice at the same price, I'd go for aluminium and I'm curious why you're thinking differently.

Just personal preference, George. Nothing to do with any (perceived) health issues regarding aluminium (all my curry pans, bar the black iron ones, are aluminium), but over the years I've built up a nice collection of top quality stainless cookware, and (coming out of the closet here), I love nothing more than spending a Sunday afternoon with my Bosch GPO 14 CE 240V 1400W polisher, buffing kit and G7 compound bringing them up to a mirror-smooth shine. I've tried to stop, but it's hopeless.

Along with the obsessive-compulsive-impulsive purchase of random unnecessary or unwanted items, inability to stop adding chillies to everything I consume, and a worrying addiction to adrenaline-based activities, it's clear that I have issues...

I ordered one of these 3 weeks ago: http://www.morphyrichards.co.uk/products/cooking-and-baking/pressure-cookers/48815-Rapid-Cook-Pressure-Cooker.html (http://www.morphyrichards.co.uk/products/cooking-and-baking/pressure-cookers/48815-Rapid-Cook-Pressure-Cooker.html)

But they haven't yet delivered and Morphy Richards tell me it was returned undelivered. Congratulations "Yodel" on taking the most useless delivery company award for not even leaving a card (despite allegedly attempting to deliver 3 times).  Smells like BS to me. Doubless it's a big box so got left in the depot 3 days in a row then returned because that's easier than actually making any effort to deliver.

Come on SD, we're only pulling your leg now.  Cooking equipment - polishing :o :o.  Eh, no.  I wash, rinse and wipe.  There is no polishing of any of my kitchen equipment, other than my masala daba of course   ::)  The only thing I polish is my Belgium beer glasses  :D

I hadn't thought of aesthetic appearance but I agree a stainless steel 'designer' pressure cooker might well look smarter on the shelf, if you're happy to pay a lot more, and take great care of it. Good luck to you.

Truth be known I've been drowning my lack of high quality pressure woes down the pub, and am about to repair to the darkest corner of my room to gently weep while flocculating a small comfort blanket...

We're trying to keep the lid on this as we don't want too much pressure build up  :o.  Not good for the old ticker  ;D  Fine way to spend the evening SD.  I couldn't be arsed (not totally true as i'd been out all afternoon), so i decided to crack open a couple of bottles of the "ubiquotous" leffe before bed.  That little flocculationg comfort blanket wouldn't happen to be a curry now, would it??   ;D
