Any newcomer joining the curry making revolution will obviously notice the volume of onions we're getting through. It's easy to get mislead into paying over the top prices. The 3 large onions in the onion bag are about a quid now in supermarkets yet loads cheaper in asian stores.
Today an indian grocer / delivery driver came into the business and mentioned he sold onoins to the takeaways and restaurants. Apparently a 10kg bag is sold for ?1.50 !!! (English and Dutch for anyone interested)
Wow, i thought i'd done well with 3kg for ?1.67 at asda :(

I stupidly bought 4kg for a quid, when they had 10kg for 1.49 in a place in Blackburn. ::)
The asian supermarkets are so much cheaper for lots of things. Not just curry related.
Fresher and tastier than the big chains too. ;)
Frank.

Lidl - currently 36p for a kilo of onions.
-
?1.50p for 10Kgs in Luton asian stores, 90p a Kg in Sainsburys, a B*****y Rip Off!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Yep, definitely worth finding an Asian grocer for onions (amongst other things) - the price difference is quite significant. One thing I will say, however, is that I find that I need to throw away quite a few of the onions I buy from my Asian grocer due to them going bad. Not sure if it's the same for everyone else.

Similar experience myself Ramirez. Think it depends on how quick they turn over their stock. But even so still works out cheaper than the supermarkets :D

I also bought 5 bulbs garlic for ?1.50 in an asian store recently as well. Truth be known they were a little bit old, but for that price.... :o

Aren't they about 30p a bulb in the supermarkets, albeit smaller than what you typically get from a grocer?

Must be going to the wrong supermarket, as i've been paying going on a quid for two, albeit prepackaged not loose. DOH!!

morrisons do a 10kg bag for 3.99

Pearl Asian Supermarket in Halifax (Quuens road) sells everything you could ever want and a huge SACK of Onions is ?1.50..probably 10k or more in weight

That 10kg bag is the same price for 10 kgs bag at Makro here in Thailand - and when you think it would be cheaper NOT LIKELY!

Lidl are doing the Large Spanish/salad/mild onions for 0.69p at the moment.
Net of four, mine weighed in at 1.125 Kg and are usually 0.99p.
Pretty good price, if like me you, prefer them to normal cooking onions in your base and can only get them from local supermarkets.

My local Asian shops: One does 10kg for 2.50, and one does 10kg for 1.75 - no difference in quality/freshness.
The local Tesco Extra does 5kg for 1.99
I don't by onions at Tesco...
