Title: takeaway tilda basmati v sainsbury's basmati
Post by: Whandsy on December 09, 2011, 01:01 PM
Well after the recent takeaway debate i went out and bought some tilda basmati (expensive) as per takeaways suggestion and cooked some for tonights meal (I previously have been using sainsbury's basmati). I washed it 3 or 4 times as suggested until the water was clear and cooked it with some whole spices etc. Was there a difference??

OMG what a difference!! Certainly to what i've been using previously. I have uploaded 2 photo's to show the difference. Both have been taken off my iphone but with no enhancements The sainsbury's one I took last week and the tilda I've just taken now. The colour difference is incredible and the smell as soon I took the lid off was what I've been missing. I WILL be paying extra in the future. For all you non-tilda users I think you're missing a trick!!

Wayne :) :)

Wow - that's a result. I use Tilda myself. It's best to buy the biggest bag you can as the cost starts to scale down.

Cheers,

Paul

Just another point to mention about Tilda, it is the only rice that I can cook perfectly in my rice cooker.  All other brands end up being overcooked?

Hi Ray
If you remember off my other thread they told me to check it and stop it cooking just prior to being finished as to allow for a quick microwave later :)

Regarding the cost Asda are doing 10kg bags for ?17 and 20kg bags for ?30.

For the 10 kg bag that is 17 pence for 100 grams. I usually eat about 70 grams which would work out at about 12 pence. That's quite cheap in the grand scheme of things and a similar amout of pasta or even spuds or chips would probably cost more.

Cheers,

Paul

Paul,

I just bought a 1kg bag for 3.50GBP.  Even at that price, it still only works out at 24.5p for a 70g portion (if my maths is correct?)

Ray ???

Compared to the cost of any meat you put in your curry it is pretty cheap really.

Cheers,

When i eventually get to the bottom of my bag of Badshah, i'll give it a go and compare the results before i make my next bulk purchase  8).  I must confess i've been more than happy with my 20k sack of Badshah.  It's certainly lasted well and is most definitely aged ;D

I'm using Kohinoor Basmati at the moment as i got 18Kg free from a job, which i find as good as Tilda...the Tilda Everyday rice is no good for curries though as it is very soft.

Hi Whandsy, which picture is which please?

Also do you usually wash the Sainsbury's stuff 3 or 4 times until the water is clear too?

Hi gary
The very white white rice is the tilda which gives off the aroma and no i didnt previously wash the sainsburys rice either but thats a good question. I do a lot of cooking (not necessarily indian) and can whole heartedty say the same results would not happen with the sainsburys and many other suppliers of rice as well. The grain looks very diiferent straight from the packet.
Give it a go and good luck ;)

Hi Whandsy
Tilda is very good, but far too much marketing hype and price.
I also think Tilda Pure Basmati is a bit fragile, with too many broken
and different size grains, straight out of the packet.
But I agree, any supermarket own brand Basmati is poor.

But there's plenty of quality Basmati Brands out there.
HABIB Basmati is very good
Kohinoor Basmati, even their Trophy brand is all good and cheaper.
Zeeshan Basmati is good (Newcastle Importers)

But the best by far, I've used, is Zoy Basmati but it only comes in
40kg/20kg linen sacks and you never see it in retail Asian shops.

If you get the chance of some Zoy Basmati, buy it, it won't disappoint.

I'm out of it at the moment and using Zeeshan, but will be splitting a bag of Zoy with a friend, the next time he's at the wholesalers.

cheers Chewy

Cheers Chewy, I'll keep an eye out for that brand as my local asian supermarket has an aisle full of varying rice brands / sacks :)

Just another tip on rice, which you probably already know, but incase you don't, after washing the rice, if you soak it in salted water for 20 minutes or so, it bleaches to a brilliant white..!
