Title: Fresh Coriander Timeline
Post by: chewytikka on September 09, 2011, 11:58 AM
Hi All
Fresh Coriander Timeline

I'm trying to establish when fresh coriander was introduced into our BIR curries.
I've got it down to the late eighties, early nineties in my memory, but it may have been earlier in other regions.

Anybody got any memories of the first time they tasted Coriander.

cheers Chewy

1986 first time for me chewy,
I had just started work and a curry was a weekly treat.
Brighton Grove tandoori, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Cannot remember exactly what it was in, veg pilau rings a bell though.
Instant love affair thats still going stong today.

I'd say that fresh Coriander was probably used in BIRs almost as long as BIRs have existed. I know it was present in the first curries I had in restaurants in the 1970s. Then there was Madhur Jaffrey's BBC television series 'Indian Cookery' first broadcast in 1982. I remember that I went and picked up fresh coriander from a local shop, almost as easily as I bought rice, in order to try a couple of her recipes.
