I like to try Indian restaurants abroad but I worry if restaurants abroad will be as good as the restaurants in the UK. So far I have eaten in Indian restaurants in Belgium, Germany, Austria and the US. The restaurants I tried in Belgium, Holland and Germany were quite good but I was disappointed with the restaurants I tried in the US. What have been your experiences with Indian restaurants abroad?

30 years of travelling the globe and only 2 places spring to mind.
Mount Everest in Pilar, Spain. Nepalese family run restaurant.
And the Taj Mahal in Marmaris, Turkey. Head Chef is from Bradford!
All others were nowhere near BIR. More like FAJ (from a jar!).

I'd concur with your poor opinion of Indian restaurants in Belgium, Germany, Austria and the US.
However the Indian food I've eaten in numerous places in the Middle East, the Indian sub-continent and Far East have, in general, knocked spots off any BIR food I've eaten in the UK. It's different, probably more authentic (not dumbed down for perceived UK tastes) and, for my taste, a whole lot better.

I travel to the US about 4 or 5 times a year and I have found the Indian Restaurants there diverse from each other quite a bit. The ones that are run by "Southern Indians" I have found there food to be more like Indian traditional home cooking, their Madras's contain a lot of coconut and curry leaves, but the the ones run by "Northern Indians" are much more like our restaurants.
One of the best I have eaten in is the Gaylord in Schaumberg which is not far from O'Hare airport in Chicago. http://www.gaylordil.com/ (http://www.gaylordil.com/) In fact the last time I went there which was last September, there was actually an Indian from Glasgow working in there.
I'm off to Florida on Tuesday and am actually attending a cooking class in the Green Chilli in St. Petersberg. It was only $40 with a voucher I found on line so am looking forward to this. I'll let you know how it goes and also whether it is Southern Indian or Northern :)

Hey 976, don't forget to pass on any gems that you pick up during your cooking class. Maybe, you could even pass a few on to them ;D ;D

There is one in Albufiera, Portugal that is superb. All Indian staff, and the King Prawn Madras is fantastic.
