Title: Hello from South Africa
Post by: JimZA on July 01, 2011, 01:23 PM

Hi,

I'm a ex-pat from the UK. I have been living in South Africa since the end of 2004.

Super weather and scenery on the plus side!

On the minus side is my nearest Indian restaurant is a cool 700km round trip!  :-\

Odd really because South African's love curry but they don't anywhere near a fraction of the Indian restaurants found in the UK.

I have however, nearly perfected my curry skills and turn out quite a mean Vindaloo. My wife says as good as we got in the UK...

Rice is still my problem! Of course I use basmati rice and steam it with two split cardamom pods and one clove per portion and it's OK. But I never get that classic "British Indian Restaurant" flavour...   It's fast becoming the holy grail for me! :)

I used to order "Special Fried Rice" at my local Indian restaurant in the UK and it was such a lovely flavour, I'd eat a spoonful before I even attacked my curry.

Now to search!
