Okay, so the idea of meeting up isn't a new one, but as far as I am aware it has never really happened. I guess pat of the reason might be down to family commitments and people not being able to travel half way across the country.
So how about a Summer BBQ in the park? Open to anyone plus wives and kids. The men can drink beer and burn chicken tikka and kebabs on the BBQ, the ladies can (hopefully) enjoy the sun while gossiping about who's husband is the most annoying curry cook, and the kids can play football or in the playground.
Would this work? Would there be lots of interest? There is a nice big park in Farnborough with massive BBQ's you can turn up and use. I'm happy to organize it and be the caterer. Either everyone can bring food and drinks for everyone to share, or I can buy lots of stuff and we split the cost.
I appreciate it might be a bit far for the overseas contingent, but Manchester / Liverpool is only about 3.5 hours drive away. If the family is all coming why not find a cheap b and b and make a weekend of it. Legoland is just down the road.
Let me know what you all think.

Great idea Chris, I would certainly be interested in attending and the outdoor element solves a lot of the venue problems (ie. no-one wants a huge bunch of strangers showing up at their house). Location will always be a problem as nowhere will be close to everyone but you could never solve that short of hiring a chauffered artic lorry and driving up and down the M1 with a mobile curry-fest party going on in the back!
Farnborough is fine by me though, only 30 mins from home so it gets the thumbs up on that count. Curry heads + BBQ = a lot of tikka kebabs probably ;)

Lol I thought you meant Scotland at first Chris! Great idea - probably a bit far unless I plan ahead so I won't say no at this stage but would love to see the photos if I don't manage!
-
I'm up for that :) - great idea Chris!
-
Might well be interested, depending on dates.

It sounds like a really good idea I mean , beer, BBQ and curry, all together with like minded soles, hell yeah! :)
I'll have to speak to she who must be obeyed, though. :-\
If this does get going and we can make it, i'll bring several gallons of Sussex's finest ales from both Harveys (http://www.harveys.org.uk/) and Dark star (http://darkstarbrewing.co.uk/). That will help keep us lubricated. ;)
-
I've updated the OP to include a link to a document so everyone can register their available dates.
Just add your name and use the drop down boxes to indicate the days you are available.

Good idea Chris! :) I like the sound of this and I'm pretty close. I'll update the spreadsheet with my availability - although as it is a way off, it might change. Striving for a Saturday would probably be a good idea, given alcohol is likely to be involved. ;)

"Mr Plod pricks up ears with interest ..." ;D

Sorry i won't be able to make it, but make sure you take loads of photo's and i can have a giggle at em. :)
-
Have spoken to the good lady who is quite up for it! :) She does work every other Sunday and out of preference we'd prefer a Saturday. So i'll mark us down for Sat on each date.
Malc :)

I think the barbecue suggestion is another great idea of Chris's which I was pleased to register an interest for.
However, are photos such a good idea? Some people may not be too keen and it might put them off going, me included actually. I'm already having second thoughts which is a shame. It's not just the thought of people treating photos as a spectacle for laughs or giggles (how appealing is that?). If people weren't the slightest bit concerned with Internet security, we'd all use our full, real names here. Why else would anyone call themselves by the name of a spice or similar? Cover may be 'blown' if photos are taken and posted here. What does everyone else think?
-
George, I would respect anyone that wishes to remain incognito and would expect others to be equally attentive, when uploading pictures. Please don't let it deter you from attending.
I really can't see the problem and am happy for my ugly mug to take it's place amongst the gathering. I've certainly nothing to hide, perhaps i'm naive but life is too short to worry about it. If you feel that you still can't attend then I understand.
:)

Great to see so much interest already. Saturday the 23rd or 30th July are looking like good options at the moment and the weather 'should' be good.
I agree on the subject of photos, especially if we are taking partners and kids. Anyone that wants to be in a group 'men round the BBQ' shot for the website is welcome, but otherwise, lets just have a great day without anyone worrying about lots of photos.
Cover 'Blown' George? How intriguing. Just what is your surname? Lucas? Clooney? W Bush?

No, I'm just a nobody and I want to keep it that way. If 'cover' is so intriguing why doesn't everyone use their full name as the ID on this forum with home adddress, postcode and telephone number at the bottom of each and every post? As long as everyone attending is respectful of individual wishes, as Ash suggests, then I'm sure there won't be a problem. It's a great idea.

I just looked at the park's web page and assume there's some cost for using their barbecue facilities. Also, nobody is allowed to take their own gear, so we won't be able to take along a tandoor, propane burner ring or anything.
Do you know the charge per person for using their barbecue facilities?
-
Now confused. I am certain there was a mention of Frimley Park earlier, and perhaps even a link, but now I can find neither. Has something accidentally been deleted, or am I going mad ?
** Phil.
-
It's been moved to the spreadsheet, Phil. :)
-
Thank you, Ramirez : glad I'm not going mad :)

Picnic Areas with barbeque Facilities:
Members of the public are welcome to use the barbeque facilities provided at Frimley Lodge Park but are not allowed to bring and use their own barbeques. To hire a barbeque, please contact Pistachios in the Park 01252 838998. Pistachios in the Park offer various barbeque hire packages including barbeque fuel, food and beverage packages.
All major events should be pre-booked and parties of 50 or more are asked to contact the Greenspace Team before arranging any events in the park. You can contact the Green Space Team by emailing leisure services...

This sounds like the kind of event that could be great PR for the site - perhaps the local press would do an article?
-
Thats a pain that they have started charging for the BBQ, it always used to be free, you could just turn up and use one. I'll find out how much they cost, hopefully not too much. At least if we have one booked we are guaranteed the pitch. You used to have to get there early on a weekend to bag one.

I guarantee I could get Chutneys to come alone and do some demos. Shame about the limited facilities though. If we could take a gas one, or a decent hob burner we'd be well away.
-
Chris, if you going to contact them, explain what we are doing and ask them if it is possible to bring a gas ring with us, or, if they can supply one.
I can understand the reasons they now charge for this, we can only hope the pricing is reasonable.

Hi Chris,
I'm pretty much available most Saturdays and just up the road, so if you confirm the dates I'll probably be there :)

Sorted!!!! I think Saturday would probably be the preffered date especially for people who are travelling some distance, then they have the chance to relax on Sunday before the dreaded Monday morning!! :)
-
Set the date in your Diary. The First Annual CR0 Curry in the Park is scheduled for Saturday the 6th August 2011.
I'm just waiting for the documents to come through so I can book our patch. I think it's about ?25 but I'm happy to 'sponsor' the BBQ hire. Just bring an extra bottle of Cobra for me :)
Az should be there to answer any and all questions you have (poor chap). Plus I'll ask if he can bring in some samples from the restaurant to compare with our efforts!

Hope you like 'Real Ale' Chris, i'll be bringing a gallon or two!

Does he know what he's letting himself in for! Due respect though, what a top bloke indeed.
:)
-
Excellent - thanks so much for arranging this Chris and the "value add" of having a real live BIR chef there to answer questions is priceless. I have a feeling we could all learn something to help further our cookery on this day.
I'm praying I don't end up double booked (which always seems to happen!) but for now I'm keeping 6th August marked in my calendar. Luckily it doesn't clash with an F1 race ;)
-
Looking Forward to it :)
-
Buggerski, no go for me. I'll be in Amsterdam at the time.. :-\
Look forward to the pics (for those that ain't too paranoid to have their photos taken ::) )
Have fun, and next time!
-
The BBQ is booked and paid for. We have it from 11am on Saturday 6th August, time for a few beers while the charcoal lights! I reserved Pitch 4 which has a nice corner plot for a bit more privacy.
I have updated the spreadsheet so people can say how many people they are bringing. We can have up to 50, I don't think we will get that many though! I have also asked Stew to add the link to the News section of the homepage.
I also asked about a gas ring and they have given permission for us to use one. Does anyone have a decent one they can bring so we can knock up some curry sauces?
Az said he's happy to come as long as he doesn't end up cooking all day :) I said that was fine but he will be probably answering questions all day! He runs a wholesale ingredients business too so if anyone needs any cheap spices / pastes / equipment let me know and I can put in an order.
I'm really looking forward to this, I hope everyone on the list can make it.
-
Brilliant work Chris, I'm sure everyone appreciates your efforts in arranging this and hopefully we'll get a few more attendees. Do you know what the smallest size Az does is? I might be interested in the masala he uses to make Roshney chicken but if he's set up for catering sizes maybe he doesn't offer consumer sizes. I guess 1L would be as large as I could go.
I take it you're proposing this is a lunchtime meet, or do you see it carrying on all day (lunch then dinner later?) Just planning travel arrangements.
-
Updated! :)
-
Hey everyone. We are down to 5 weeks on Saturday until the first annual CR0 Curry BBQ in the Park. I thought it would be a good idea to refresh this thread as some newer members wont be aware of it.
Nipoori Man is hopefully going to get a Nipoori tandoor for us to have a play with. If someone has a gas hob they could bring then we can knock up some sauces. Maybe we could have a little competition if we can agree on an event! Chicken Tikka or Sheik kebabs would probably be easiest.
Im hoping Az from Chutneys will be there too to bring some samples and answer questions. I promised him he wouldn't have to spend the whole day cooking though!
Everyone is welcome. Just sign up on the spreadsheet at:
