Title: What are your favourite BIR dishes (poll)
Post by: Peripatetic Phil on January 30, 2011, 11:51 AM
Inspired by George in "Madras 2011" (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=5378.msg53525#msg53525), I thought it might be interested to learn what dishes members normally order when dining out in a BIR. I'll kick off with my personal list, in vague order of decreasing preference.

Popaddom : plain
Starters : Reshmi Kebab, Chicken Tikka, Onion Bhaji
Main dishes : Chicken Madras, Chicken Vindaloo, Lamb Dhansak, Tandoori Chicken, Lamb Biryani, Chicken Bombay
Side dishes : Sag Aloo, Mushroom Bhaji.
Rice : Pullao, Mushroom Pullao, Egg Pullao
Breads :  Chapatti, Stuffed Paratha, Keema Nan
Drink : Mango Lassi, Coke, sparkling water

** Phil.

Ray ;D

When I was younger I had a taste for Phal on a Friday & Saturday night after the pubs shut, but it always gave me hiccups & the owner of the restaurant said try this (teaspoon of malt vinegar) & my hiccups stopped lol.

Here's my list. I think a forum poll display would be difficult to arrange, given the vast range of options. I used to choose primarily between chicken korma and chicken biryani but I seldom order korma these days. Either it's become less tasty or my own tastes have changed:

Popaddom : plain and spicy (a mix) with the range of dips/chutneys
Starters : Chicken Tikka or Meat Samosa
Main dishes : Chicken Dhansak, Chicken Biryani or Lamb Tikka Jalfrezi
Side dishes : Sag Aloo
Rice : Pullao
Breads :  Plain naan, Keema naan or Peshwari naan
Drink : :Lager

Good choices George! - are we just polling for mainstream dishes or are house specialities included?

Mine:

Popaddom : plain and spicy (a mix) with the range of dips/chutneys
Starters : Chicken Tikka or Sheek Kebab
Main dishes : Chicken Vindaloo, Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi or Madras if I know the BIR is a top one.
Side dishes : Sag Aloo, Onion Bhaji
Rice : Special rice, mushroom rice
Breads :  Peshwari naan
Drink : :Lager

If specialities are included, then it has to be the Chicken Roshney Mirch  :P

Cheers all

I used to choose primarily between chicken korma and chicken biryani but I seldom order korma these days. Either it's become less tasty or my own tastes have changed:

I feel the same about Korma, it was my favourite for many years. Though I would probably still enjoy a really good Korma, I much prefer to have more savoury dishes these days. I put this down to my taste buds improving/maturing, call it what you will.

The following list contains all the dishes I love the most and not necessarily in order:

Poppadomas: Plain + Mango, Mint, Onion Salad, Coconut Chutney
Starters: King Prawn Puri, Shami Kebab, Seekh Kebab, Lamb Samosa
Mains: Chicken Tikka, Chicken Korai, Chicken Tikka Balti, Lamb Dopiza (dry)
Sides: Onion Bhaji, Mushroom Bhaji, Saag Aloo
Rice: Mushroom Rice, Pilau Rice
Bread: Naan, Keema Naan, Chapati
Desserts: No room after that lot ;)
Drink: Start with a Cobra/Kingfisher finish on House Red

Most ordered routine:
Starter: King Prawn Puri
Main: Chicken Tikka
Sides: Mushroom Bhaji, Onion Bhaji, Saag Aloo (all to share)
Bread: Plain Naan or Chapati

For me it's fairly straight forward.

Poppadums: with onion salad coated in mango chutney
Starters: Onion Bhajis - brought out with the main course so I can dip them in the curry sauce.
Main: Roshney Chicken if it's from Chutneys, Chicken Vindaloo if anywhere else. If I'm drunk I tell the chef to surprise me with a stinking hot curry. They always taste lovely but I can never remember what they were!
Sides: Bombay Aloo
Bread: Garlic Naan if sharing, Keema Naan if not
Rice: Pilau if sharing, Keema if not (Keema rice is rarely on the menu but most places will do it if you ask nicely)
Desserts: Never
Drinks: Stella if at home, Cobra if at the restaurant

After writing that it doesn't sound so straightforward. The standard Saturday night takeaway is:

4 Poppadums
1 Portion of Onion Bhajis
1 CTM
1 Roshney Chicken
1 Pilau Rice
1 Garlic Naan
1 (Free for ordering over ?15) Bombay Aloo

How many days till Saturday??? Typing this is making me very hungry, especially being on a Mon - Fri diet!

I think this would make a very interesting table if we ever got together :)

I'm off to Florida next week, to experiment with some more Indian cooking with my fiance :)
