Hiya, Whilst i've been away from home Jen has been getting together with a guitar player and putting some stuff together, she's already got a few gigs lined up.
Anyway here's the link if anybody wants to have a listen.....
http://soundcloud.com/jimmy-and-jen (http://soundcloud.com/jimmy-and-jen)
And if you need chearing up afterwards, here's a link to a online free game called Bauns, which is excellent and makes your eyes bleed.

i like the traditional folk music
she sings the fields of athenry well, being a celtic man i know that song well:)
-
Great stuff, Peter, Jen & Jimmy : exactly my sort of music. Only listened to "Crazyman Michael" so far, but "Fields of Athenry" will be next, as that is absolutely one of my favourites. The best version I know is the one linked from "In Callandar" : http://www.incallander.co.uk/music/fields of athenry.wav (http://www.incallander.co.uk/music/fields of athenry.wav). I used to know who sung this version, but it escapes me at this moment ...
When are they touring deepest Kent, Peter ?
** Phil.

Thanks on behalf of Jen :)
Dunno when she'll get to Southern England, she was supposed to be up on the north coast last thursday for 5 days, gigging two or three pubs but snow got in the way.
I'll let her know about this thread and get her to come in and reply :)
Yep she'll pop in as soon as she can.

many bands sing it, practically every irish/scots folk band has done a version. the dubliners version i think is one of the best, bands that also have a version are the corries, drop kick murphys, wolftones and the scottish wolfstones

-
But do you recognise who is singing in the one linked from "In Callandar", Jimmy ? I'm sure I used to know his name, but for the life of me I can't remember it.

phil that link dont work
That's why I had to hack it several times :( The BB s/ware (quite reasonably) doesn't like spaces in URLs, and your reply pre-dates my final hack !
P.S. Listened to the Dubliner's version (I had heard it before, but wanted to refresh my memory) and whilst I agree that it is more professional, I think that the Callandar guy is more sincere -- he really tells the tale as if he witnessed it.

sorry for hyjacking jens thread, but maybe she could try singing a few of these if she aint heard of them
The Dubliners-Rocky Road to Dublin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxBKgOyMzSc#)

How much are the Dubliners paying you for all these shameless plugs, Jimmy ?!
-

i was brought up on this stuff, even had a beer or two with luke kelly
-

this is a great song for the navvies out there
Dubliners - McAlpine's Fusiliers *HIGH QUALITY* (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMvv3LL94GM#)
-
Now, back on topic : my top three would be "The Islands", "Ride On" (intrigued by the double-tracking in this one), and "Crazyman Michael".
For Jimmy : I first heard McAlpine's Fusiliers sung by Dominic Behan at the Well Hall Pleasaunce (http://www.wellhall.org.uk/) just about 50 years ago !

Hi and thank you for your comments. Jimmy and I have been recording these tracks for my mam as she is having some very nasty treatment for an illness at the minute and she asked for a song a week to get her through it. All of the stuff we have done has been recorded in my sitting room we had no intention of doing anything with it except to make my mam smile a bit hahaha but now it is going to become a cd called Sitting Room Sessions as it sums up what it is lol. We have really only been messing around with thte songs which is why some of the songs have had harmonies added as I was just interested in seeing if I could do them, some of the songs like Crazyman Michael,Slipjigs and Reels and Ride On I have sung for a long time but others like Wind beneath my Wings and Stuck in the MIddle we learnt as we recorded them (lots of fun).
As for coming to Kent haha you get us the gigs and we'll see what we can do :-)
Thank you again for your comments
Jen

For Peter, Jen & Jimmy : are you familiar with "Sylvia and Golden (http://www.sylviagolden.co.uk/music.html)" ? Sylvia is the sister of a long-time friend, and the style is not dissimilar to Jen & Jimmy.

no sorry Phil I started singing after a drunken night in a pub about 16-17 years ago but have never really been a big music listener ( makes no sense I know) although since I started singing I have to admit I love Fairport Convention and Christie Moore is great My ambition is to sing Who knows where the time goes at Fairports Cropredy Festival never happen but can keep dreaming hehehe

I can think of at least three local venues that might be interested, Jen : two pubs and a social club. No idea how they do bookings of artistes, though. If you can make some suggestions as to how best to get them interested, Jen, I will see what I can do, or alternatively I can give you their contact details and leave it to you to make contact.

The Islands is a Ralph McTell song and it is about the Braer oil spill off the Shetland Isles in January 1993 .

ahh its strange i post that then jen:)
heres another for ya. if stephen lyndsey is around he will remember this one from school in dundee, i know i do, we used to have to pick a girl to dance with in the gym hall to this. i think it was the most embarrasing moment in most lads lifes running across the hall aqsking a lassie to dance with you and she shakes her head and says no. the horror of it, and then you look around and all the lasses are now taking and you gotta dance with the teacher haha. shudder
anyway this song is known to most scots, tell of an important moment in scots history too.

I think that's Paddy Reilly singing there, Phil...... I grew up listening to all the old Irish songs, brings back some good memories ;D (Dad was a jock, born in 1920 :) )
Have to say I love the "Black velvet band" by the Dubliners....My father-in-law's a good Irish Maaaaaaannn ;D and I've sung many a song with him whilst in our cups lol
Love the sound of Jen's voice too ;D Fields of Athenry, Paint it black and Steeler's wheel!!!! GREAT SONGS!!! I love the Stones!!
-
hey domi know that song well, infact can pretty much recite every dubliners song and most of the irish folk and scottish stuff.

Not convinced, I am afraid Domi : the "In Callander" singer (1) has a very pronounced rhotic "r" (a Scots trait) and clearly enunciates the final "ing" of "calling", whilst Paddy Reilly's "r" is virtually untrilled and he pronounces "calling" as "call'n' (no IPA on this board, so I can only do approximations !).
I see from my notes that I have the singer of the "In Callander" version as Pete St John, but listening to the latter that is also not a possibility. So still no wiser :( Any more nominations, anyone ? (Or maybe I should just ask the "In Callander" webmaster !)
** Phil.
(1) Anonymous In Callander singer (http://www.incallander.co.uk/music/fields%20of%20athenry.wav)

Just been in touch with the "In Callander" webmaster, and he has revealed that he himself is the mystery singer. He writes "The singer and guitarist (12 string) was myself, Alistair Reid, amateur folk singer and very unprofessional creator of the website."

My mistake too...I listened to the Paddy Reilly version on youtube and not the link you posted :-XI blame it on a herbal cigarette I had last night.......been months since my last and I quite forgot how strong they are nowadays :o lol Paddy Reilly's is the best version though ;D :P
BTW jimmy2x (love that movie! :P ) The Dubliners' version of the sicknote beats the colliers too :P ;D
