Title: Banner Advertising
Post by: Secret Santa on October 27, 2010, 11:08 AM
From Admins post:

Quote
Your ad will get on average 180,000 page views per month in addition to the 6,000 or so unique visitors per month.  Don't forget the 13k members we also have who drop into the site.

And yet we still only have about twenty regular posters. WTF is going on here? Why aren't those thousands dropping in with info, questions, chat etc.?   ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Without wanting to suggest anything, I find those numbers very hard to believe.

Hi

I assume those numbers must come from a reliable source, so it's a shame so few people contribute.  :(

cheers commis,

You always get the bashers.  I want the site to grow and i want a bigger server.
We failed on donations for the VPS so im trying other avenues to raise revenue.

Check stats, we get on average 180k page views per month.  Dont forget we can have over 100 people (mix of members / guests) on the site each day.

My stat centre on the hosting is showing over 6k unique hits per month.
For example we had over 400 new members signing this month.

The site is buzzing and hopefully this will attract some sponsers who want to advetise their business/service/product.

I can't believe that we've failed to reach a target of 99 quid.  Even if we do only have 20 active members, that's only a fiver each!  What does a TA curry cost with rice naans and so on?  Surely we could have donated the price of a TA curry each, especially when you think of the money we have saved on TA's and BIR's, mainly down to the recipes on this site.

I'm absolutely staggered, gobsmacked even :(

Seconded.  I pledged GBP 5-00 shortly after this thread started, and I'm listed as a "Contributing Member" so I assume I have also donated in the past, but there do seem to be some regular contributors who haven't yet announced their willingness to donate: I can only think that this is an oversight on their part rather than real stinginess.

Well, I donated a tenner, because I always order a starter too ;D ;D ;D

I can only think that this is an oversight on their part rather than real stinginess.

I'm sure that you are correct, or it maybe that some folk don't like using the net for financial matters but if anyone has a paypal account, it's very secure and very easy to set up too!

Does seem a shame, that we have all these members and yet Admin almost has to go cap in hand for a 99 quid upgrade!  The "other site" charges 6 quid I think, for membership, could you imagine what kind of site we would have if we had to pay a 1 pound joining fee?

With 400 members joining this month, we would have had our upgrade, and then some.  I guess the main attraction of cr0 is that it's absolutely free, it's just a shame that it's taken for granted!

Guys,

I am not going cap in hand, I could afford to upgrade myself.
However in order to generate suistained revenue to meet a ?100 a year for a VPS hosting account we need some income.

Therefore if some busineses sign up for advertising we get a recurring income.  Thats why I am doing it.

It would also help if peeps click on the google ads as these draw in revenue.

No it's definitely stinginess on my part.   ;D

And the 'contributing member' guilt-trip inducer just makes me less inclined to contribute.  >:(

Probably the wrong term of phrase but the point remains the same.  Between us, we have not managed 99 quid to get an upgrade, that would benefit us all.

And as far as you being in a position to afford the upgrade yourself Stew, again, that's not the point.  The point is, we need an upgrade for all the reason that you pointed out in another thread.  I would have thought that between us, we would have far exceeded the 99 quid needed based on the amount of active members.

I don't have a paypal account...is there any other way to donate?

Domi, it's really easy to set up a paypal account, and I personally think that it's one of the safest ways to transfer money across the net, unless somebody knows different?

Sorry if it seems like I'm on my "high horse", I'm reading this back, and I'm coming across like a right T**t.  I'm not on a rant, honest ::)

I contributed a while ago & I never got a "contributing member" title, a thanks or any recognition for doing so which I never expected anyway, but I don't care as I just like the website & that is why I contributed.  So I am sure SS that you don't have to have the contributing member title on you name if you wish to contribute.

It appears under some member's names, before their "qualification", as in

Dibb117
* CONTRIBUTING MEMBER
* Sous Chef

and presumably indicates (some of) those who have used the "Donate" link in the past.

Oh, that's funny? - made a couple of donations now, and I don't have that on my 'thingy-bob' on the left.

Oh well.

I always assumed it was to indicate members who have posted recipes, but the donation thing makes more sense.

Anyway, I can't actually remember if I donated last time, so I've donated a fiver just in case.

With 400 members joining this month, we would have had our upgrade, and then some.

I think not! How many of the 400 would have paid even a pound? Very few, if any, I suggest. Also, if 400 people really joined, where are they?

I used the Times online website quite  a lot until they started charging. Now I read the news elsewhere like a few other million people. I support the idea of revenue from banner advertising, rather than from charges on people reading the web pages. I could pay ?5 for information gleaned, but I'd feel it would be fair to send in a bill for a lot more as 'professional fees' for advice posted. Someone like CA should be paid ?100s or ?1000s for all the recipes he's posted.

You are quite correct George, as soon as people see any kind of fee, they instantly switch off unfortunately.  I'm just trying to think of way's to raise the money needed to keep the site in good shape, that's all.

Maybe but he did post the recipes freely for all to enjoy, and we really don't want to get into "Paying for recipes".

My train of thought on this one would be, a member joins the site on a 30 day trial period.  If they are happy with what they see, then one off joining fee of maybe a pound or 50p, after the 30 days is up.  If they are not happy, they simply go there own way!

Again, this wouldn't guarantee revenue for the site, as they could simply just print off what they need within the 30 day period, and let their trial expire, without a thanks, kiss mi arse, or goodbye!  But maybe ten members will stay, and if we got that every month, then it's a little bit each year towards upgrades.

I dunno, any thoughts?
