Title: Forum keeps going offline
Post by: solarsplace on October 05, 2010, 03:35 PM
Hi

The forum seems to be getting gradually worse for being down and constantly alternating between available and down.

Not sure where its hosted although a responsive tracert ends up at Node 4.

Is it on a shared server and someone else keeps running cron jobs that are bringing the server down?

Anyway, what about a small campaign for a pound or 2 donation from each member and get the forum hosted somewhere more reliable?

Cheers

Hi

Well, personally speaking I'm more than happy to make another donation, however I think we certainly need a nay or a yay from admin before we even consider how to launch the campaign.

What do you think Admin?

Regards

Russell

Guys,

What we actually need is virtual private server (VPS), this will give us much bigger dedicated  space and allow pictures and videos to be uploaded directly to the site, rather than hosted elsewhere.

I guess the site it just getting too big for shared hosting anymore.
The one I would look at is the VPS lite (?99 per year) which has 25GB or space.  At the moment we are 2GB and way over the allocated space according to my stats.

Link to VPS

If you intend to donate please put in the message 'Server Space' then when we have ?100 quid ill sort it.  I already use these guys to host the site so they should be able to transition the site swifty with minimal downtime.

Would there be any merit in restricting hosted content to just the textual content and essential software, and making use of free image hosting services such as Picasaweb and free video hosting services such as Vimeo for the more space-demanding resources ?

I hear what your saying but after a certain amount of time, free hosting space removes the images, this means posts are left without images embedded for all to enjoy.

Hence why i set up the image hosting solution.

Ill leave it upto you guys, but I guess it would benefit the forum.

I've never known Picasaweb remove an image, Admin; it is a part of the Google empire, and seems rock-solid so far.  I'm certainly happy to chip in if a VPS is the only reliable route, but if you can easily get the statistics, it would be interesting to know what our usage currently is excluding images and videos (and how this compares to our limit).

Hey Stew,

I'm more than happy to chip in also but do you think that this deserves a topic of it's own.  I'm worried that this thread could get buried .  I know it may sound like going a bit "cap in hand" to the members but we all enjoy this great site, and I'm sure we all want to see it run at it's optimum.

On that basis I have moved this to the Let's Talk Curry Section for max visability and to see if people want to help out.

Hi Stew,

It seems reasonably quick today.  Have you had sufficient donations for the upgrade then?  or is it just a fluke at the moment?

I'll leave it open if we get ?100 i'll upgrade.

Stew, can you clarify, please : are there recurrent cost implications if we upgrade, and if so, what is their approximate magnitude and how would you plan to cover them ?  And what are the recurrent costs for the present site, and how are they covered ?  I would assume that, at the very least, you have to renew the domain name at about ?9-00/year, plus the cost of a basic hosting package.

Hi,

It would cost 90 per year for a VPS, that would be every year.
At the moment i pay like 40 pounds per year for the hosting, but we have exceeded the space limit with the package.

A VPS means we will have enough space for years to store images and posts.

OK, so looking at the stats for recent messages I can see ten active members.  We can almost certainly safely double that, because those stats go back only nine hours or so.  Assume, then, a minimum of 20 active members,; on that basis we would each need to chip in a fiver a year to cover the running costs.  Sounds good value to me.  Count me in.
