Hi Guys, I was wondering if anyone has a good substitute for tomatoes in curries?
After 50 years of Crohn’s disease and feeling mightily disappointed with the treatment I have been receiving from the NHS, I took matters into my own hands and consulted an Ayurvedic practitioner. The results in a few short weeks have been immensely encouraging, drinking ajwain water and coriander water has had greater benefit than all the expensive drugs I have had injected over the last 7 to 8 years.
Problem is the diet I have to follow precludes tomatoes and given how many curries are tomato based I am desperately looking for an alternative. If anyone has any advice I would be very grateful.

No great fan of cooked tomatoes myself. I have often simply omitted them from curry recipes which call for them. The results (to my palate) are frequently superior to the original version with tomato.

I think carrots would provide a similar sweetness and colour, especially if they are roasted first before being pureed?

Unfortunately carrots are also on the forbidden list. We did have a carrot base for a traditional curry here some time ago that was copied over from the old U.K.food&drink.Indian newsgroup.

Hmm. I had a look at a Crohn's "avoid" list, and if you can get them, maybe do a squash base. If you can get them, butternut squash have a lovely flavour and go savoury as easily as sweet (I make Thanksgiving pumpkin pie with butternut squash_=)

Thanks Bham, we always have butternut or some other squash in the house as the dogs get it in their diet. I will investigate further.

Curry Pumpkin soup / Curried Pumpkin soup / Pumpkin Curry soup is a thing so I'd imagine it should make a reasonable base.

How about Nomato sauce? This is supposed to be ayurvedic but it does have carrot which you said is a no-no?

Rich Nomato Sauce
Serves 6-8
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Augmenting
You'll need
1 small sweet potato peeled and chopped
1 small beetroot, peeled and chopped finely
1 ½ tsp mineral salt
1 ½ medium carrots, chopped
1 tbsp dried coriander
pinch hing (asafoetida)
pinch turmeric powder
pinch black pepper
1 chopped date
1 tbsp maple syrup - optional
1 ½ tbsp ghee
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 cup water

Thank you for that, from memory all the root vegetables are out, including the bag of turnips I cropped yesterday.
Never mind, peeled, chopped and roasted the dogs will enjoy them.
