Hello,
My names' Ray and its been 24 hour's since my last curry :( (but, havin another in a minute) ;D
Ok, so this is a light hearted post but, what is the addiction?
For me, it can't just be the cooking of one, although that plays it's part. I've been addicted to curry long before I could cook them. Dya think that there could actually be some addictive properties in the ingredients?
I love allsorts of food, Chinese, Italian, Thai, even good old English food, but nothing like my love of BIR food. So what is it?
Take tonight for instance, her indoors has gone off to work at my sister's pub. Now normally, I would have tootled off with her, not wanting to stay indoors by miself, plus, mi sis won't let me pay for a drink all night. But tonight, the first thing that sprung to mind was, "as soon as she's gone, I'm gonna get messy in the kitchen, and knock up a bangin ruby for mi tea" How sad is that???
I'm even dreaming about the stuff these day's :(
The wife said to me tonight, "Right, I've put the lottery on. What would you do if we won it?"
The first thing that come to mind was, I'd open a BIR restaurant. Doesn't matter that I don't know enough about BIR food to open one, I'd employ a chef. Doesn't matter that I've no idea how to run a restaurant, I'd employ someone that does. Doesn't matter that there is already thousands of BIR's in Manchester, mine would be the best.
I replied to her question, already havin answered it in my head, "dunno love, what would you do?" she replied, "I'd have a boob job and liposuction" and right away I thought, 'no you feckin wouldn't, I could buy a brand new professional cooking range with that money'
I am seriously beginning to think that this obsession with curry is not healthy, especially when I'm dreaming about the stuff.
It's got that bad, that I was looking at Domi's loverly doughnut's ;) and thinking, 'wonder what they'd taste like with curry in them ;D
Oh well, I better get off and get mi curry fix, I'm gettin the shakesssssss assss I typeeee
Anyone else feel like this, or am I the only saddo on here? :(

I don't know what it is really either but I do have a love for sauce in everything, perhaps thats it for me at least. I don't think its sad you are staying in to do something you really love either, thats bang on with what life is about isn't it.
Count me in I'm a saddo too. :)

I understand about the addiction thing with curries and believe, somehow its real, the really worrying thing for me is that it seems to affect the male population a lot more than the female.
I mean yes, sometimes the missus will say" make a curry love", but its not that often, and 99 times out of a hundred im the instigator. And to be honest, what with the missus being a northern bird and only evolutionaryly advanced enough taste wise to find peas pud and gravy with her chips a culinary highlight, i think she only asks for it to get out of cooking for that particular night.

like peterandjen it seems to be male who are affected most.
i think it must be something in chemistry that we like the buzz from the chilli.

Its funny you should say this Ray as I was only thinking that Fenugreek is addictive the other day. I seem to put it in everything now! There is just something about that 'curry' smell that does it for me.
The wife is getting fed up with it though. The house is begining to hold the lingering smell of yesterdays curry. Even my daughter came home from school and complained!
Funny though, as when I mention a Tikka, Tandoori, bhaji, kebab or other, they all usually reply, yeah!

Exactly the same here mate. I could do with a cooking shed like Achmal's (I think it was his?) That would really get the neighbours going lol.
I'm convinced that there is an addictive property in one or more of the ingredients. Never before have I been so obsessed with a paricular cuisine.

There was a report on TV yesterday about the chilli factor. Chilli affects both the pleasure and pain centres in the brain which could explain our addiction. It's our own masochistic tendencies ;D and I'm all for a bit of S&M hehehe :P
The thing is that you really have to mess up to get an inedible curry, they're just so damn tasty! We've had 5 curries this week (No 6 today lol) though we went without for a couple of weeks though it seemed much much longer! I dunno about anyone else, but I certainly couldn't sit down to spag bol so many days in a row. Plus there are so many variations of curry that are so different to one another so you can easily have a curry a day for a week and never sit down to the same dish twice. Not forgetting if you watch your oil and salt they are incredibly healthy meals too (minus the sides lol).
As to the male/female thing....I think men consider it more manly to be cooking a curry or bbqing I don't ever hear men talking about cooking unless it's generally about curries/bbq's......I couldn't tell you of a single time I heard a group of men comparing recipes for iced fancies/cheese straws :P Or maybe that's a Yorkshire thing? :o

James Martin & Brian Turner?? They're proud tykes but they would quite happily sit around chattin about chocolate fingers and cream puffs ;) lol
Tis true though, I don't really bother too much about cooking other foods, especially deserts. Maybe chinese and Italian but not much else.

Well I suppose I'd better say it... I'm an addict and yes I've been on the methi(leaf)adrone program but its no good, I still find myself worrying where the next curries coming from ;D
and what about 'The Hairy Bikers' two good northen lads that can cook a mean dessert :P

Aye but the hairy bikers and BT & JM make a living out of it :P I meant your everyday average joes ;D Anytime you get a group of blokes together the talk always gets round to footie and curries and never melting moments... ???
I'm always impressed by men cooking and even more so if they do the washing up afterwards ;D but then again 'im indoors can't cook for toffee lol so maybe I'm biased in some way? :P

Domi, Your right about the variation of curry, though 'curry' doesn't deem to fit the bill for me. The majority of Indian style cuisine I am cooking at the moment is mostly dry, though I am starting to look at more traditional curry dishes.
We had a cracking dish the other night which was grilled plaice but brushed with a marinade of chilli powder, curry powder, turmeric, corriander, crushed garlic, chopped coriander leaf, lemon juice and a little olive oil. Served it with a home made Moroccan cous cous and salad. I know the cous cous was off the map but the dish was brilliant.
I have two fillets of Cod awaiting a similar treatment but this time i'm going to make a bread crust with the usual spicing and top that over some tomatoes placed on the cod.
I watched a program on chilli a while back. That explained how we get a a natural buzz from the chilli. Just like a drug, the more you eat the more you get hooked. fro me though, it has to be something more than just chilli. I noticed recently that my mildly spiced curry powder, doesn't seem to smell as 'curry' to me these days. Perhaps this is similar to chilli where you get used to it and crave yet more. I really think Fenugreek has alot to answer for here.
Talking of Hairy Bikers, anyone catch last weeks episode on their trip around India? They are great fun to watch.
