kind of tabbing on to something Axe was talking about (how to turn his tuna steaks into something curry), I've got the sunday lunch on the go but, I can't help thinking, 'How could I make it more interesting. Then I thought, why not substitute all the ingredients of the lunch, with an Indian alternative? So, here's my take on what I think could be a good twist to the traditional sunday lunch: Traditional to the left, alternative to the right:
Roast Leg of Lamb Raan of Lamb
peas/carrots/cauli Bengali Vegetables
Boiled/mash pots Bombay Potatoes
Yorkshire pudding Onion bhaji or pakoras
Gravy Madras curry sauce
I did mention doing this Indian influenced version of the sunday lunch today to my wife, she told me that if I do, her and the kids are going to McDonald's :(
C'mon, who's got the minerals to give this one a go ;)

Seriously though, i'm all up for an alternative spin on the Sunday joint. Though i'm not sure I could bring myself to do that with a Rib of Beef. Not because its sacred, but because it tastes so damn good as is. ;D
Just have to convince the wife now, she's a roast tatty queen though, so it going to be hard.
Perhaps Cauliflower Pakora has some mileage in it and what was the potato dumpling done on Master chef recently, that might work. What about your onion, potato & carrot bhaji Ray?
Today though, we shall be dinning on a slow roasted shoulder of pork with plenty of crackling, roasted spuds and parsnips, cauli, carrots and brussels.
I'll bet brussels curry well.

:o You can't mess with a good roast dinner...that's sacrilege! there's no Indian side dish that can replace lovely roast tatties cooked in goosefat and good rich red wine gravy for me. I mean, I love me curries but there's a place for everything :P

It must be a woman thing. ive been trying for weeks to get the misus to let me tandoori a leg of lamb for sunday dinner but she just wont budge :(
Ive seen brussel sprouts curried before, usually on the xmas cookery programs, you know, what to do with left overs, but ill keep away from those horrible things meself.

Up until 5 or 6 years back, I would have agreed with you Domi. But i've simply got fed up eating the same rotation of usual roasts. It was at one time a saving grace to be able to throw everything in the oven and enjoy a fantastic roast. But now, I long to try different things or looking outside of the box for a change.
Put two plates in front of me, one of Roast Potatoes and the other Onion Bhaji (IG of course), the bhaji wins, its not even a close run contest.

Don't get me wrong, Axe, I love a nice slow roast indian leg o' lamb, served with a nice fresh salad and spiced new potatoes served warm, but I love a traditional roast too (which we never eat on Sundays anyways lol). but which is better? There's only one way to find out....FIGHTTTT!!!!!! hehe

Have you tried these sprout bhaji's? Must admit, I hate sprouts :( There are just green balls of fart, as far as I'm concerned, and the smell of them turns my stomach, so does cabbage, which are big green balls of fart!!!
But, I would be tempted to try them as a bhaji.............just :-X

I guess sprouts are like marmite you either love them or hate them. The biggest problem with sprouts is that they are so often over cooked. That's when they go from a nice vegetable to a nasty and disgusting.
At home we tend to go the baby sprouts which are slightly sweeter, if a sprout can be sweeter. But we do enjoy them none the less.
I will try the sprout bhaji and report back.
Oh and while i'm at it i'll knock up some Yorkshire Puds with some Spice Mix thrown in for good measure. ;D

If you say it's because I'm a bit of a pudden I'm getting me whip out :o Sprouts and cabbages aren't the only things full of hot air it seems, Bez ;) :P
Them spicy yorkshires do sound nice though...awaiting your recipe, Axe luv :D there might be something in this alternative sunday lunch lark after all :D

I tell ya what, it might make for an interesting toad in the hole. Might have to replace the regular sausage with a Seekh Kebab though.

Anyone brave enough to try it though?
Joking aside, we sometimes add chunks of Red Pepper and Red Onion to a toad-in-the-hole and it tastes great.

Domi, i'll put beef on the menu next Sunday to test a small batch of Yorkies. Not sure i'm brave enough to try the toad in the hole though.

Spicy yorkies, could be good, going back to the sprouts ever tried them thinly sliced, spiced up and stir fried?
Spice some oil with mustard seeds (or use mustard oil) throw in some sliced onion and g/g paste, bung in the sliced brussels (or a mix of sprouts and green cabbage) a little spice mix and a pinch of nutmeg, stir fry for a few minutes until they wilt a bit, finish off with a slug of stock/water/thinned down base and a teaspoon of coconut powder, cook till tender, et viola, spicy stir fried sprouts, wonderful.

It's the mustard/nutmeg/coconut mix, if you try it keep the spices to a minimum first and if you like the idea build them up little by little, especially the nutmeg.
Goes great with bbq ribs and makes a nice change from a 'soggy saag' asa a side dish.

Can I just add a word of caution. I made a curry from the leftover turkey and sprouts ( a Christmas idea), a few years ago. Suffice to say that Mount Etna seemed to be a sqeek from a flat can of pop by comparison.
Don't mix the things, it's dangerous!

That is exactly why Asafoetida is used in Indian dishes, i'll remember to add some. ;)
