Hi Everybody,
I'm a long time lurker on this site and I must say its truly amazing how much work and enthusiasm you guys put into this. I've been cooking curries the traditional way for approx 15 years but now that I don't live in the UK anymore and local Indian Restaurants are truly awful, I'm very interested to try and reproduce a BIR curry at home. I've spent FAR too much time reading the forums with great interest.
Now for the question. Has anyone considered or researched whether BIRs use MSG :o as maybe it could be a candidate for a 'Secret Ingredient'?

Hi curry monster,
Welcome to the forum ;)
MSG has been discussed on here a few times with the usual outcome being it makes little difference to the end result.
Cheers

Yes, I'm with CK on this. Also, it may be worth mentioning that considering the average ingredients of a curry, there will probably a lot of glutamates anyway.

Sounds like a candidate for the Myths list

MSG is definately in Chinese cookery but I don't think its in curry as far as "I" know...

It used to be used a lot in BIR cooking but not so much now (due to a lot of bad publicity) ... definitely not a Myth though.
I occasionally use a little in curry (and often in Chinese fried rice) - but unfortunately the next day my mouth feels like the inside lining of a camel's jock strap. :P
