Just started to pickle some onions.
bought some pickling onions along with Sarsons pre-spiced vinegar.
Topped and tailed onions, skinned them then soaked in brine for 24 hours, washed them clean then added to the jar with vinegar.
gotta wait 6 weeks for the end result though.
Anyone else here do pickling? Looking for some helpful tips.
cheers

Hi :)
Been pickling for years all home grown
I buy vinegar from Asian shops much cheaper than supermarkets 5l containers No need to buy pickling vinegar
Try a few red chillis in the jar or any other whole spices then you will have your very own designer onions
-
I have pickled onions before, found it a ball ache peeling them etc.
My favourite is pickled red cabbage, shred, layer of cabbage then salt, layer of cabbage then salt etc, leave 24 hours then wash and pat dry, place in jars and add your pickling vinegar of choice!

MA
If peeling small onions is so spherically painful ;D why not use large onions then cut into rings then pickle using your pickling method

pickles on the go as we speak
on the left - normal pickles using pre-spiced vinegar
on the right - a hot n spicy version
hot n spicy - added coriander seeds, whole dried birds eye chillis, dried Kashmiri chillis, home grown cayenne and home grown Hungarian wax chillis.
the smell from the spicy version is amazing :)

Did you heat the vinegar and the spices together first or just add the spices to the jar?
-
MA, just added to the jar. soaked onions in brine for 24 hours first then washed clean
Sarsons pre-spiced vinegar. according to the blurb, no need to heat vinegar or spices. simples.
