Title: Do you put alot of weight on if eating curry? And how much oil?
Post by: littlechilie on August 21, 2014, 10:03 AM
My wife and i make alot of homemade curries so we try to be quite healthy! But I feel a real good flavourful curry requires lots of oil.
For me lots of oil is two chefs spoon, but I am guessing peoples opinions will differ!

As I'm now in my 40s I'm finding I need to work out in order to maintain my weight at an even level, so this means I can keep eating what I like or give up cooking BIR and eat salad :o

The above is not an option for me as I enjoy the flavours of rich spice and meats way to much to eat salad all day.

So What's the general opinion on eating what we like while staying fit and healthy? Or is there other options or reasons why curry is are main food staple.

Is curry considered calorie dense?

Thanks.

I try to limit my oil intake, I normally curry for 2 and would typically use 1tbsn of oil in the first stage.  To ensure I don't burn the spices I make my G&G paste with more water and add it sooner, likewise with tomato dilute.  It works for me and I am more than happy with the results.

I mainly use chewy's 1Hr pressure cooker base and half the oil in that too, and spend more time skimming at the simmer stage.

I'm currently giving rapeseed oil a try as i've heard its meant to be abit better for you and I can't taste the difference.

Personally I think BIR is calorie dense but sooo good - I just try to compromise so I can eat curry more without the gut/guilt.

Thanks Matti that's great feedback and I have never tried rapeseed in cooking, but also have wondered how much a difference oil can really make!

I have made curry with olive oil in the past without any problems, but tend to revert back to veg oil in my search for perfection.

I may try flavouring some olive oil with garlic and chilli to see if it can be used in cooking curry! Ok not BIR but the point is if my Heath can be improved I'm all for it.

Curries can actually be really healthy if you cut down or omit the oil but obviously the end product won't be like a BIR which often are swimming with oil.

I make mine without oil and the end result is very very good. When I get the chance I intend posting my chick pathia recipe including the base I use. I'll also try to post my chicken tikka masala recipe which does need oil but is a special treat.

Deks

(moderated). Curry + beer = fat, what can I say? I exercise everyday and beast it on weekends. However I'm not lardy I'm more barrel chested. But I'm ok with that and it seems the woman are too.

I prefer to look as myself as quite hunky with a silent c. And without stuffing his face with curry and beer, when George reads chillihothot's post, he'll have a heart attack.  :-\
