Title: Silly question but...
Post by: Samurai on April 03, 2014, 12:59 AM
Realizing that cricket is likely the norm, are there any baseball leagues in the UK?  I see there are some hockey leagues over there now.

I think the link between baseball and cricket is wrong, my friend - it should be baseball and rounders. There are plenty of rounders leagues in the UK - here's a couple of pics :P

"Rounders", eh?  Hmmm......looks kind of like baseball - except the diamond isn't diamond shaped.  Spent an evening watching cricket once and still have no idea what's goin' on.  Suspect I'll have even less luck with rounders. But thanks for the info Garp.

Incidentally, this is what we call "rounders" (note: all images that may appear to resemble persons living or dead are purely coincidental):

Why post such distasteful images on a forum you've just joined?

I'm minded to delete them. What do other members think?

I'm not bothered, mate.

I thought the bottom one was the last CRO meet-up :P

I didn't remove the ugly images - the OP did, and I thank him for that. Yes, I guess we must have different senses of humour. This was nothing to do with the photos of a game of rounders.

I'm assuming in Canada, a rounder is someone with a large beer belly  :)

Well, if watching grown men trying to kick a spherical lump of leather between three posts while each in turn lays down on the ground and pretends to be injured is what turns you on ...  I mean, it's not as if getting the ball between the posts is an end in itself; even if one side manages to achieve that, they then put it back in the middle of the lawn and start all over again.  Completely crazy, to my mind ...

Three posts?   ???

I thought you meant "posts" as in "messages" for a while, and that really confused me, but now I understand your question, yes three :

Two verticals and one horizontal, unless my eyes deceive me.

You're eyes do deceive you Dilip.  I don't think there is such a thing as a horizontal post.  ;)

Technically speaking, it's a crossbar, but I'm sure Phil knows this  ;)

a post or column is vertical
a transom or beam is horizontal
well, that's me got another post :)

If I buy three fence posts from Tate Fencing, and lay one of them horizontal to transport it, do I then have two fence posts and one fence transom or beam ?

by turning a post 90 degrees you are, in theory, making it a beam

So I could return it to Tate Fencing under the Trade Description Act, then ("not as described") ?  I can't help feeling that they must have an enormous number of such returns, then, since almost everyone I see collecting fence posts from them lays them flat for transport ...

do not feed the trolls ????

you have bought a post, if you use it as a beam that is up to you.

if you cut it up and use it as firewood, that is up to you

you still bought a post.

pedantic or what

Definition of a post :

a long, sturdy piece of timber or metal set upright in the ground and used as a support or marker.

So, I would say that when Phil goes to Tate Fencing, he is simply buying three pieces of wood - they don't actually become 'posts' until they are set upright in the ground.

Can't beat a good pointless debate :)

And just to add some more useless info to this pointless conversation

beam,
a long, sturdy piece of squared timber or metal used to support the roof or floor of a building.

A post doesn't have to be set in the ground either but it is vertical.

I'll let you take that one up with the Oxford English Dictionary, Gav :)

It's not wasted, Phil.

I just wrote a nice sketch where you went into Tate Fencing and confused them totally (tried to post it and lost it). Can't be arsed doing it again but it ended with "Fork 'andles" :)
