Hi folks,
joined the forum last week, spent the last few days avidly reading all the inputs, recipes, watching videos etc etc. There is SO MUCH stuff on this site to take in.
Anyhoo, decided to give Chewytikka's 3-hour curry base a bash and follow up with his chicken madras recipe. Both easy to follow.
So .....3 hours later I had a huge panful of almost complete curry base - smelt good, not strong but with just a hint of a BIR. And this is where my problems began. My electric hand blender decided to blow up on me as I was beginning to blend the base to the consistency of Chewy's example. So had to use the attachment on the Magimix but not sure if it did the blend as well as the other would have done. Ah well, filled 6 tinfoil containers with curry base and put in freezer, kept the remainder to make the madras. (Sieved the base as well !!!)
So on to the madras - again followed Chewy's video. And a short while later me and Mrs Poppadom are staring at the best looking and smelling curry I've ever made !!! 48 years this has taken me - yes 48 !!!
So we tuck in and .... have to say .... I'd give myself 6 out of 10. Not quite got it right BUT it's the best damn curry I've ever made. Maybe 7 out of 10.
Not bad for a first attempt ... and has stimulated the desire to get it right. Thanks for the videos Chewy, I'll be going back to review what I didn't get right and where I can improve.
Ho hum ....

Nae luck with the blender, PP, but Chewy's Madras must have cheered you up - its' a good 'un. :)
-
good post PP - keep at it!
-
PP I know you'll be going back to analyse what you think went wrong but just thinking about the finished article what would you say wasn't quite right about it?
-
Nice one PP. Obviously homemade curry is now going to feature quite regualarly on your menu then ;D ;D Keep us posted on your exploits. A pic is always good ;)

Thanks for the comments folks, will keep trying. Secret Santa - consistency not right, perhaps I hadn't got the oil/base separation correct and the flavour just not quite there. But as I said in the original post - BETTER than any other curry I've EVER made !!! :-) Maybe it was a 7 and a half out of 10. Any yes - I will get pics next time. :-)

(Sieved the base as well !!!)
Did Chewy say to sieve the base?
You also said the consistency of the finished curry was not quite right.
-
yes George, Chewy showed the sieving on his video - I think maybe my Magimix attachment thingy hadn't blended it fine enough 'cos it took yonks to get it through the sieve whereas when Chewy does it in his vid it goes through in no time.
Also think that probably not got the amounts of the spices correct. Even so ... darned good curry. 48 years of trying and now I'm near the promised land I'm probably too old to enjoy it properly !!! :)

Hi PPete
Thanks for trying my recipes and happy they worked out for you. :D
A great start and once you get into it on a regular basis, you may well forget about your local Take Away.
I kackered my latest stick blender (dropped it :( ) and use my trusted 70's Moulinex liquidizer. very Retro ;D ;D
Curry On Pete ;)
Cheers Chewy

Hi Pete.
I would say that if the first curry you made from this site was your best ever, that's a great start :)

Oops, I wasn't finished yet.
Chewy's Madras has become the standard madras round here. I've made it just once (albeit with a different base) and there's not much I could complain about. Very nice indeed.
Maybe try a different base if that one isn't to your liking. The madras is suited to a lot of bases. I'm lazy so use the same base all the time - so it's a neutral one.
Good luck and have fun
