Currently living in Australia, missing my local BIR, although there are a couple here that are really getting it together. Sourcing spices was initially a challenge, but now I know a few local Indian supermarkets. One of which has an British Indian behind the counter-..Have been growing chili, ginger, mint and coriander for leaf so far. I made a batch of spicy mango chutney when I picked up a couple of trays of mangos cheaply from my local fruit and veg shop. They all went to friends, the biggest compliment coming from a Mexican I work with..she loves her spicy food.I picked up a Balti recipe book in a charity (op shop in Australia) shop last year and have been working my way through it. I did manage to buy the balti dishes on line which are great for curry nights  I have tried with limited success to educate my coworkers into the finer points of good curry. There does seem to be a reluctance to move beyond a butter chicken that prevails here. I have tried it and found it pretty bland. Anyway, great to see the site and am so looking forward to trying some new recipes

It's funny but a lot of the more enthusiastic curry eaters I have met around here are from Britain. As you say the locals aren't that adventurous with their curry's (I'm a born and bred Aussie and I hope an exception to that rule).

I used to frequent an Indian supermarket/wholesaler in Wolloongabba, They had the best range of ingredients I have ever seen. Have you been there? Are they still there?

Unfortunately the local restaurants can be a bit hit and miss but making your own is obviously a great hobby.
