I get this mag from my local TA. They just get the one copy but never read it. If anyone would like it drop me a pm and I'll pop it in the post. Quite a few good features on the trade. It seems some TAs are being naughty and are still using chicken stock in their base gravy, for veggie dishes. :o

Very very sad. Unlike my wife (1st-generation immigrant of 20 years standing, already on 40% income tax before she left for Abu Dhabi) I am very opposed to the present and previous government's policy on immigration control. Whilst I am forced to accept that the UK has only finite resources, and that if the entire world were to move here all would starve, I also appreciate that as a nation we have far far more wealth per capita than much of the world, and to insist that that wealth is solely for "us" (i.e., native-born Britons) and to be unwilling to share some of it with those in desperate need, strikes me as selfish in the extreme. Maybe it's time for CR0 members to launch a "YouGov" petition, and call on the Government to re-think its immigration policy, initially with particular reference to highly skilled foreign nationals with firm offers of employment in the hospitality sector ...

Thanks Bengali Bob for the link
will browse away for a couple of days now

For me the article rams home the reasons why many/most TAs still can't make a half decent curry these days. Also perhaps highlights the notion that "anyone" can make a TA curry not holding much credibility.
I looked into those curry college courses when they first came out. Apparently I was about 30 years too old to enrol on any of them. I would have made a good trainee chef I would.
Rob :)
-
It's maybe not too late Rob.
With all the wannabe TA chefs on here, there should be plenty of applicants to fill the immigration gap.
Can someone with more time than me create a template CV to allow those who think they can do it apply?

Is the resident swivel-eyed loon becoming a circumstancial liberal-whore? Doesn't that go against the grain of dyed-in-the-wool Conservatism Phil?
-
I would be obliged if this whole thread could be removed. This is a forum for curry discussion - not political. There are plenty of places for people to express their political views, but this isn't one of them.

The whole reason for being apolitical is so that one can express the views in which one believes, rather than the views that are espoused by any one political party.

I don't think it's that bad so far and some interesting views have been expressed (even if my brief included the deletion of a whole thread, which it doesn't.)

Unfortunately Phil that boat has sailed many months ago. You are a swivel-eyed, Daily Mail reading Loon...if you doubt that just see your unwarranted rant against Chris and his sheer audacity to plan an ebook in the face of no income!

Garp is right - and it is turning into an ugly thread.
-
I don't think the thread is turning ugly -- it is an important topic, and the fact that a tiny minority seek to derail it should not be reasons for deleting or locking it. If that were established as a precedent, then it would be only too easy for someone in the future to deliberately derail a thread just in order to get it removed or locked. Those of us interested in civilised debate are quite capable of ignoring those who are not.

I agree. I think it's much better than the heavy censorship used on some forums. If anyone doesn't like this thread, just pick another one to read, instead.

Rob :)
I can just see Nigella who looks lush and is available at the minute, apparently.
Edit: - In fact after a lot of locally brewed real ale --- Very Lush.
-
Two blokes standing in a bar and one says to the other...
"I agree. I think it's much better than the heavy censorship used on some forums. If anyone doesn't like this thread, just pick another one to read, instead"
They then drink beer and smile at each other...
Aww :)
-
re image featuring Nigella
And after another drink and looking at Nigella, there's certainly a crisis :P :P.
And not wanting to agree or disagree and after a night out for a retirement do basically talking politics ( I do have an opinion though), perhaps we should have a 'Down At The Pub' board.

I think that's very kind of you :)

Interesting bit in the Nigella one about the haggis munchers using cheap beef to pass off as lamb.

"Interesting bit in the Nigella one" and "using cheap beef to pass off as lamb"
That's what Phil posted about last week, and he reported it.

Knew I'd heard it before. There was also the horse meat scandal not so long ago as well that was discussed on here.

I am confused as to why my post was moderated in this thread.
If I remember correctly the words I used were "then smiled at each other"
pls would you tell me why this was moderated out George as it has you as mod on it ?
I never used any foul words George (mod) and you make my post look like it was offensive.
Pls would you tell me why you removed my text George (mod)
I await you reply, I did nothing wrong.
........................................................
Further with ref to my deleted text (way above somewhere) I would like to add that in this same thread
someone posted (un-moderator mode)
"I think it's much better than the heavy censorship used
on some forums. If anyone doesn't like this thread, just pick another one to read, instead"
Then (in moderator mode) George deleted some of my text !!
..........................................................
I await a reply please, this is a none intrusive and a none offensive request. Its simply a request for the mod who deleted my text to tell me what I did wrong, or at least please would you reinstate my original text back to the original as posted by me.
Thank you.
Graeme.

I think it was the smiling thing. its not allowed. Although lusting after nigella is. ::)
And I mean by that George, ...Onion Seeds, not that luscious bird who's available at the minute.

Unless she can cook a bir curry I'm not interested :)

I'm sorry if I interpreted it wrong. I've now reinstated the original text. Sure, it's not swearing but I saw it as coming under the heading of 'personal insult'. What on earth did my previous post have to do with two guys standing in a bar, smiling at each other, and the use of the word 'aww'.
It's just plain weird. I don't like that sort of tale being associated with me. Where's Graeme coming from and what is he trying to suggest by using those words?
-

Maybe he thinks you're a bit of a gay George ;) :-* (is there something your not telling us )

Yes, you're right about where he's probably coming from, and because I'm not, I find it highly offensive.
Or am I over-reacting? Would other heterosexual individuals on here be offended if anyone suggested or implied they're gay? And to anyone who is that way, good luck to them, but isn't almost homo-phobic and against the law to be mocking it, or drawing attention to their orientation?
-
I'm personally confident with my sexuality, so it would be OK for anyone to call me gay, it wouldn't offend me one bit.
-
Well said goncalo. people are what they are, and we have no right to judge.
Just trying to lighten up the thread George, no offence meant :D
Les
-
Apart from the fact that you can call me what you want and I would take most as a compliment and not be bothered about the rest, I'm yet to see where the personal insult is in Graeme's post.
-
Good grief. Now I've seen it all.
This is George "I promise if given moderator powers I will only use them to remove spam" in action ::)

I'm not surprised that you crash in here (late) in order to criticise me and misrepresent what was agreed subsequently. You just don't get it, do you?

And this
George,
I cannot remember the exact wording or spelling for that matter...
but did you or did you not pledge to delete and only delete obvious spam?
please reply yep or nope ::) or yup lol
That's right, before I changed my mind.
-
So we now have...
"Or am I over-reacting? Would other heterosexual individuals on here be offended if anyone suggested or implied they're gay? And to anyone who is that way, good luck to them, but isn't almost homo-phobic and against the law to be mocking it, or drawing attention to their orientation?"
And...
"Yes, you're right about where he's probably coming from,
and because I'm not, I find it highly offensive"
So what did I really post ?
"Two blokes standing in a bar"
I am confused as to what there is not to understand about the words "blokes in a bar"
So "Blokes" in a bar has been converted to what ? And we are not allowed to smile at each other and the next time I am at the local Burlesque bar remind me to dial 999 and see how many "different orientations" are arrested for pointing out some ones other "orientation" (some do love to show off) I would put money on it most would want to be arrested when the police arrive in uniform anyway - see now that's a joke (only just I know) or call it a light hearted comment, either way its something this site and a member or two maybe missing out on.
Regards Graeme.
-
the next time I am at the local Burlesque bar...
Graeme, if you're at a Burlesque bar you're gay by definition! :P

This has been on the cards for a while and to be honest the Pakistani/Bangladeshi community need to change and start integrating.
You never see any female staff in any takeaway/restaurant. That needs to change, it's uk not Pakistan and its not in any way racist to point that out. Most places are family run joints and it would be a lot better if all the family were to help out.
I can see why they want to use imported staff as they are dirt cheap, have no rights etc but then they start on the benefits gravy train and it takes the piss hence the gov are stopping it.
It wouldn't hurt for them to integrate more as well, the only time 99% of their customers see them is at work, they normally all live together. Just visit spark hill Birmingham some time. Not healthy.
I'm very good friends with several Bangladeshi and have attended their family functions but the way they have been indoctrinated by religion is bad and will take a few generations to sort out, the kids already are kicking back and I don't blame them. The girls are pretty much breeding machines and don't have an expectation of a career.
So to the point of the OP, its a very good thing that workers from Asia are being stopped, they can do what all other normal businesses do - train and recruit the best person for the job, not restrict it to male Muslims.
-

In ireland, we have women staff behind the counters from pakistani (punjab/kashmiri) origin. I have not had very good experiences with any of them (3 cases). They must have been gone to the bathroom when god was distributing courtesy and basic people skills.

VP, the very fact that you have several very good Bangladeshi friends is a clear indication that your remarks have no racist intent, but I think you misunderstand the nature of society. Have you, for example, ever visited Happy Valley in Hong Kong ? All the (rich) expatriate Britons live there in one giant enclave, and integration with the local population is almost non-existent. In Abu Dhabi, where my wife works, all the expatriates (from wherever) club together, speak English to each other, and never have any interactions with the local Arab population other than through commerce. And when I went to France with a group of Rotarians, as soon as we were back in the hotel we all reverted to speaking to each other in English. It is simply human nature to want to socialise with other members of the ethnic group within which one grew up -- I count myself very fortunate in having real friends in many countries around the world, and being married into a Chinese/Vietnamese family I take part in many of their activities, but on a day-to-day basis I still spend almost all of my time in the company of my fellow Britons.
** Phil.
-
Phil, your point is very well made. Just look at the ex-pat brits in benedorm who don't learn the language and expect 'little britain' instead of embracing the local culture. It's just not healthy and leads to hassle for both the interlopers and the natives. I find if you make an effort to fit in with the language and customs then the locals respect that.
Like I said in my previous post, the pakistani women I know are really friendly and couldn't make you more welcome in their homes when I visit for family occasions(always visit during ramadan for epic feasts!). None of the burka nonsense either in the house. The pakistani's (and bangladeshis which is same thing really) need to sort out the 18c thinking that is pumped down their throats by the dark ages imported imam's every week at the mosque. Like marrying first cousins from remote villages then importing them to the UK to 'keep the wealth' in the family because thats what used to happed 200 years ago so the family could keep 2 cows etc. madness.
Hell just watch the news when you see pakistan and it looks a like $hit hole with no sewers, health and safety/building regs or any respect for the individual. Personally I'm an atheist and I'm sure that is a capital crime over there. They are 100 years behind the rest of the civilized world mainly due to the idiotic religious practices being forced on the populace by a few nutters.
Ive got 3 kids and if some imam told me my daughter was 'property' to be traded/married off and couldn't get a job where a 'man' could see her face he'd get told where to go pretty rapid.
/rant off!
