Hi Danny and welcome!
Pick the taz base and look up Stephen Lindsay's recipes for the taz base. You can hardly go wrong.

Welcome, Danny. For a base sauce, each has his/her owned preferred recipes, and many will, I am sure, make good and useful suggestions. But when you speak of making a masala, I am less clear what you mean. My understanding of the term is that it refers to a blend of spices, but I wonder whether you have that in mind or whether you are thinking of making a dish that is usually sold as "something masala" (for example, chicken chlli masala). If you could clarify this I am sure you will get many helpful replies.

OK, understood. In that case let me say that my personal preferred base is KD1/PC (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php/topic,5671.msg56167.html#msg56167), but there are many other excellent bases documented on this site that others will recommend. I do not personally use a masala, preferring to add the spices individually. Others will, I am sure, recommend their preferred masala.
