Title: Oxtail - Any Recipes
Post by: Gav Iscon on March 26, 2013, 12:22 PM
Perusing my Indian supply shop today I noticed that they sell oxtails for a reasonable price, half the price of the supermarkets. I've always thought oxtail as one of the ultimate finger foods while still on the bone and one of my favourite recipes I've tried is Oxtail with ginger and chilli. (http://www.dailylife.com.au/food/recipes/oxtail-with-ginger-and-chilli-20111019-1m201.html) Now does anyone (Phil?) have any Indian recipes for Oxtail? Google-ing brings up Madras and Vindaloo but i would really like to try something a bit different.

Fingers crossed.

I'm afraid not, Gav (speaking for myself, that is).  My first acquaintance with ox tail dates back to my childhood days when "oxtail soup" (tinned, probably Heinz) was a regular feature on the home dinner table, and I remember distinctly that this was an unusually spicy soup that I did not much enjoy.  Fifty or so years later, seeing oxtail for sale in Waitrose, I then took it home and cooked it in a very English way, omitting any trace of spice, and I rather enjoyed the results.  So for me, I prefer my oxtail without spices : others may be of more use in producing an Indian recipe, but I will consult my recipe books later today to see what they have to say.

I've had a good Google and according to one site (http://www.ifood.tv/network/oxtail_curry), its not a meat they would use in general. As it was stacked up at the butchers counter, I thought I might be missing a treat. Would be grateful if something turned up Phil. I'll also dig my older less used books out and see if i can find something. If not, its back to the Chilli and Ginger which I can heartily recommend and cooks well in a slow cooker.

I don't have a recipe i'm afraid Gav, but like Phil, I will consult the books later.

I can't help but think that this would lend itself to a traditional style Rogan Josh, based on my initial thoughts of a spicy version of ossu bucco.

Cheers

Malc. :)

I love food and love nothing more than talking about it, apart from eating it of course. But it frustrates the hell out of me when i'm on a fasting day like I am today!!! :-X  ;)
