Title: British Indian 2go UK Style Indian Cuisine
Post by: rallim on January 31, 2013, 07:21 AM
Just found this Indian restaurants menu via facebook. A few familiar terms used, for one "BIR" is used on their facebook page  ;), check out the the name of the dipping sauce for the chicken pakora in the starters menu  ;), even the name of the restaurant sounds familiar, for the life of me though, I can't figure out why?

Cory Ander, am I right in thinking that you live in WA? I can't remember...if you do, have you heard of this restaurant? have you tried it if it's near to where you live?

Unfortunately it's on the other side of Oz from where I live or I would have tried it, maybe one day if I ever get over on holiday.

Oops forgot the link: http://www.britishindian.com.au/ (http://www.britishindian.com.au/)

Hi Rallim,

Yes, I do believe this is the one recently opened and owned by one of our very own members - "Aussie Mick" (a British expat).

Haven't tried it, yet, but will hopefully be paying a visit very soon!   8)

Nice looking menu Mick!  :)

"Chicken Tikka Masala Phal"...hmmmm, now that DOES sound very familiar!  :P

Good luck to him and I will need to get over to try it...Let me know how you get on when you try it CA. There is a so called British balti house over this side but wasn't impressed by it, the dishes were bland and tasteless but there is an Irish pub next door so that made up for it  :D

Good luck to him

Indeed.  Not least of all for having the balls to do it.  8)

Well done Mick and I wish you every success mate.

I wonder how many recipes he has used or at least been inspired by from off here.  I would love it if I thought one of my recipes was actually selling across a counter, not for any acknowledgment, but just for satisfaction really.

Ray :)

Review of "Aussie Mick's" British Indian 2 Go Restaurant - Kingsley, Perth:

So, "Willyekerslike" (who has just emigrated to Perth  8)) and I finanally travelled to "Norf of the River" to try out Aussie Mick's recently opened British Indian restaurant and to hopefully meet the man himself.

We had poppadoms (with various dips) for starters, followed by Chicken Tikka Vindaloo, Chicken Jalfrezi, Pilau rice, Keema Naan and Peshwari Naan.

Here are some photos (sorry about the quality, they don't really do the meal justice...and we were far too busy scoffing the curries, to worry too much about taking photos!):

The "Meal for Two" (minus one of the Pilau Rices...and a few other items that we'd already eaten!):

Chicken Jalfrezi:

Chicken Tikka Vindaloo:

Pilau Rice:

Everything was very enjoyable indeed!   8)

The Naans were great, with a good amount of tasty filling.  The Pilau Rice was nice, fluffy and delicately flavoured (with very generous helpings, too boot!).  The Chicken Tikka Vindaloo was nice and tasty with a good (I would say "right") amount of "bite" for a Vindaloo.  The Chicken Tikka was nice and succulent and delicately flavoured.  The sauce was a great texture and flavour.  The same was true of the Chicken Jalfrezi.

I (we) thouroughly enjoyed all of the dishes and certainly would be more than happy to be served them in any British Indian Restaurant.  We will certainly be paying more visits to sample Mick's other curries.

We didn't divulge our identities until after the meal.  Of course, Mick was nowhere to be seen, because he was busy churning out dishes in the kitchen.

Wendy (Mick's wife) and her restaurant staff were delightful, happy, smiley, polite and attentive.  But Wendy did seem to panic a little when we finally asked "where's Mick?" and revealed to her how we knew of him!  :P

We did get to meet Mick, Raj and others of Mick's team (in his kitchen) and quickly exchanged pleasantries.  I hope we didn't embarrass him too much!  Hopefully we will find more time, for a more detailed chat, on a future visit.

Needless to say, Mick and his team are doing themselves (and himself) proud!   8)

Well done Mick (and all of your team)!  Thanks for the great meal...and keep up the great work!  8)

If you are ever in the area, give it a go, I doubt you'll be disappointed!  :)

Hi,

We certainly did have a great meal which was as good as, and better than many BIR's in my hometown Doncaster back in the UK.  Service was great and Wendys face was a picture when we told her we were from "the curry website" ;D. She could't get to the kitchen quick enough :)

It was nice to meet Mick and his team who invited us into his kitchen to say hello on a very busy Saturday night.

Well done Mick, keep up the good work!

Great endorsement, lads! The food looks excellent and Mick should be very happy that his food gets the seal of approval from a couple of guys who actually cook the stuff themselves.

Wow.

Thanks fellas. I am glad that the food was acceptable.

It was great to briefly meet you both. Apologies for not really being "with it" I was very tired after a very busy saturday and Friday. I'd been working 14 hours per day for those two days. I'm not complaining though....i love it. :)

I wish you had made us aware of who you were first though, as you would not have been paying for the food. Next time.............

My night off is Tuesday, so if you fancy meeting up for a curry or beer or both somewhere, just say. I'd be well up for it, i can pick your brains further..lol

Thanks for trying us out, and hopefully see you both soon. Glad you liked the naan. This is the recipe that i posted on here a few weeks ago. I was always a garlic naan person, but now, I only have plain naan...it's fecking gorgeous. the garlic ruins it for me now.... ???

This was my supper last Friday night.

Plain naan with chicken Punjabi Masala:

We realised you'd be busy and we thought it might be a little unfair of us to "worry" you by announcing our intended visit beforehand!

I (I am sure "we") will certainly take you up on that!  It's really great to see someone, who is a member of this forum, actually give it a go and try and make something of it!  8)

Thanks again CA.

Once again, as I've said before, if I can share ANY knowledge, i will. I did post the seekh kebab recipe as promised, but nobody seemed interested, so i haven't bothered since. Plus, i don't find this forum as easy to navigate as the old one, it's all a bit confusing.

I will get Raj to write down his tandoori chicken mix and post it. it's very nice, but maybe it needs a tandoor to get 'the taste".

Oh and I have an Aussie butter chicken recipe too if anyone is interested. TBH, I've had better butter chicken, but it is still pretty good.

Don't worry Mick, they all seem preoccupied with discussing the virtues of Angus beef with dumplings, the ins and outs of weights on pressure cookers, the virtues of killing beasts and eating them, and where is best to purchase fine wines on line....etc, etc... ::)

But I am sure there are many others who are more than interested in your recipes and knowledge (as am I) and will very much take it all on board!

PS:  Like the rice, for instance, I couldn't detect the rose water, but it was nicely delicately flavoured.

PPS:  I am DEFINITELY interested in a good Butter Chicken recipe!  It's the one thing (in my opinion) that Aussie Indian Restaurants do well (and British don't seem to).

Mick, Have you cooked or been involved with AIR curries since you started your own BIR?
And if so, how would you best describe the difference, if any?

Cheers, Frank.  :)

p.s. That Naan looks perfect!

Hi Frank

My only "involvement' with AIR curries is the fact that I have lived down under since 1996. I was pretty upset with the standard of curries generally available down here. There are some good places around, but not like back home. i couldn't believe my luck when I stumbled across this forum, and couldn't believe the results that I was getting when cooking this food. we have fed it to LOADS of mates and they all said that we should open up a shop .............and well, basically, that is what we did.

I am not a chef, I'm a plumber, but I am really enjoying the change. We have massive debt, i work about 80 hours a week, and I haven't been paid since we opened in early November.

But, hopefully, it will all come good. Any profit we have made has all gone back into the business to buy things we need. We have had very quiet spells, which are worrying, but i'm sure we'll do OK. Word seems to be getting around.

On our night off (tuesday) we occesionally go and check out the competition, and we are still mostly disapointed.

So, to answer the question mate, I haven't really cooked AIR. I understand it is based on 3 or 4 base gravies, rather than our "one pot". There are some good places around, and some average ones.

Overall to my taste buds BIR wins hans down

And the Shan Pillau Biryani mix to. There was the best part of a packet in that rice we cooked for Saturday,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and it was white was it not? lol

Butter chicken recipe has been posted. 8)
