OK so years of curry have taken their toll. In an effort to not put on weight I have resorted to eating my curry on top of a bed of shredded lettuce rather than rice. and usually with a little sliced onion and tomato too, and once you get used to it it is perfectly bearable if not quite as enjoyable as with basmati rice. My question though is does any one have a recipe for good quality (skinny) curry that is lower in calories? and can we start a section for them if there are a few?

Try The Hairy Dieters, Dave & Si have recipes for a Korma, Jalfrezi & a couple of others, my wife reckons they're pretty good.

I'm very interested in this topic, since I care for my health and my weight.
My solution to stay slim is simple: I always eat half a portion, because it seems to me way too much otherwise. But I keep a good pilau rice as accompaniment.
Are you used to eat a whole portion?

It's a tricky one this. I have managed to lose and keep off 2 stones since starting making my own and just the occasional TA. At the moment I'm not cutting back on the oil, but making a curry portion last two nights. I did make a chicken balti earlier this week using just 1 tbsp oil in the pan. It made the cooking more difficult, the end result wasn't as good, and I ate the whole lot. I guess eat a bit less, spoon off the separated oil, plain rice instead of pilau or naan, and no starters. However, one of the best curries I have had in a very long time (Kushi Chicken Balti) was one of the heathier lower fat options. Could indeed do with a few recipes.

I go for the other option and eat a full portion but just plain basmati rice. Not much I know.

I've lost a stone and a half since august last year don't cut my curries out just limit it to one a week ;)

Thanks everyone - less is better seems to be the way but I will have another look at the hairy bikers curry method.

I often stick to tandoor style dishes (cooked in the oven) as these can be done with a minimal amount of calories in comparison. I bake peppers and onions which I serve along side with a mixed salad and chapatti and maybe the odd pickle or cucumber raita. You can also make snacks like bombay mix moderately better by adding sliced onion, chopped fresh chili and coriander.
I know it's not strictly 'curry' but it's a healthy way to get my 'Ruby' fix. :)

Rice isn't bad for you at all! It may be a little bit higher in carbohydrates, but it will extent the feeling of satiety and can actually help you to lose some weight. Together with legumes and some vegetables, you'll get all the essential nutritions your body needs - without any noticeable amounts of fat (except if additional fats are added).
It depends on which lettuce you are using, but some of them, have no big nutritional value at all (like, for example, iceberg lettuce), so rice could be preferable. Especially brown rice is very, very healthy, so don't limit yourself to the white, less valuable one.
You could also try out different dals, because nearly any legume has outstanding health properties, almost no fat, and they are low in cholesterol.
Your body still needs fat and sugar to work, so oil, butter, cream, sugars, that's all perfectly fine, if well balanced. I don't believe you have to starve or eat less good, to lose some weight (:

edit: I don't know what your favourite beverages are, but skipping soft-drinks, and using plain, fresh water instead can make a big difference, too! (you also avoid all that sugar and artificial flavours to spoil the taste of your food) ,)

Enjoyed watching that. Like the honesty of the chef explaining how the masala colour is achieved, although the interview lady sounded a tad disappointed with his answer.
