If it will be truly free for all to download then i would say go for it, personally i don't have many recipes on here and wouldn't mind them being used. If on the other hand there was any money changing hands i would say no.
I thought this too but then had a further thought which may be worth discussing.  If such an e book did eventually materialise, would it be a bad idea to charge a nominal fee of

I'm hoping this was the way to donate to the admin of the forum  :)

I love the idea of an ebook, especially it being free!

You old skeptic you, unclebuck.

As if................ :)   Anyone who did such a thing would be deemed to be a downright bounder.

Seriously. If CA wants to do this.........PLEASE let him do it.

You will never be able to stop scumbags from trying to earn an illicit dollar, but why should we all suffer. There are LOADS of fantastic recipes on this site, from people who care enough to take the time to share them with us.

If CA is willing to take the (un-paid) time to compile these recipes into some sort of E-book, then, LET IT HAPPEN!!

One thing which could help combat this would be to use the watermark feature of acrobat to emboss across the background of each page the URL of CR0. Any potential eBay purchaser would then stand a decent chance of finding their way here and realising they had been fleeced, hopefully prior to leaving eBay feedback (or would that be too zen-like)?

I was actually suggesting that I would be (potentially) more than happy to make an "ebook" available as a download (e.g. as a downloadable pdf file), of BIR cooking at home (i.e. my recipes, my take on BIR techniques, etc), on this forum (and/or elsewhere).

Since I would (potentially) be making it available "for free", I would not really care if it was made available elsewhere (e.g on ebay).

Since cr0 already has a mechanism for "donating" (to funds for supporting the forum), I would also not like to see us charge for it (it is a "free" forum, afterall).

Why am I suggesting this?  Simple:

  • This forum has always been available, to all, for free.
  • I perceive that there are many "newcomers" to the forum that would like honest, concise, and free advice on how to cook BIR curries at home.  And, perhaps, not want to pay for it
  • However, this forum has, it seems to me, become quite preoccupied with discussing "books" (of whatever nature and format) that are only available to those who have paid for them.  These discussions are, therefore, by their nature, in my opinion, totally exclusive to those who have bought those "books".  And, thereby, exclude the majority of our members.  And that irks me

I wasn't really suggesting that we compile a book of cr0 recipes (as has been suggested before - "cough").  Whilst I can see it is a great idea, I can also see that it is fraught with difficulties (some of which have already been cited in this thread).

Not least of all, all recipes on this forum are automatically assigned copyright to the author of the recipe.  So, besides deciding on which recipes go into a book, we would also need to secure permission of the authors to publish them.  This may/would be problematic since many authors no longer participate on the forum and some authors might object to their recipes being published.  But it might not be an insurmountable problem.

I would like to see your book CA, I think it would go down well with the majority of members and being free would also encourage the newer members.

With this matter about,"copyright" of an author's recipe seems completely ludicrous to me.

Do you ever see the person(s) who created for instance, "Beef Bourgninone" or "Lasagne" or "Chilli Con Carne" or other recipes which are cooked every single day in restaurants around the world suing those people for cooking those recipes?

If someone were to exploit one of my creations and use it in a restaurant I would be absolutely delighted!! :)

I think your idea of a book CA is a great idea :)

Hi CA, I think it would be a great idea & great gesture. I've made your base, MP(which I still use) & a few recipe's, all before I really knew how to cook them properly, so I may haver been doing them a misservice at the time. The best thing about a recipe on cr0, is the accompanying posts/faqs, which test the thing to death. I'm not sure what c2g book includes yet, but I would like to see the nuances/techniques explained properly to a newcomer, as in what makes a bir bhuna different than a standard curry?, cooking the garlic further for specific dishes, or less for say pathia etc. That will complete the puzzle for me. Your thoughts on technique would be great.

Regards
ELW
